Title: Frame / Tank Color Suggestions
Post by: Scout63 on January 22, 2021, 08:28:34 AM
I’m getting closer to the time for painting my G5 custom project.  It will be a floorboard solo seat setup with police bars and factory tank, spoke wheels and LaFranconi low pipes.  I’ve built the engine and wheels already and am going to dry assemble with everything in primer, get everything sorted, then disassemble, paint and reassemble.  I’d like to get a little adventurous with the colors.  Maybe a white frame with teal or light blue tank, maybe round case 750 Ducati blue for the frame.  I also like old BMW Dover white.  I’m also thinking of covering a solo seat in a saddle leather instead of black.  I would so appreciate any ideas for colors for frame, tank and seat.

I think white frames look fantastic and totally make a bright tin color pop even more.

A friend actually managed to bend her Sportster frame some years back and paid the dealer to replace it. During the process she took my advice and had the frame powdercoated white and it was gorgeous.

Your thoughts on color sound very tame to me.

Adventurous would be yellow frame with purple/yellow/chrome on the tins.

If you have photoshop you can experiment and come to a conclusion.

Wild or tame is the first decision. I once built a '67 Bonneville cafe bike for my brother-in-law. Silver frame, with CT DOT truck bright orange tin. It was pretty striking.

White is striking on a frame but can get grimy in the nooks and crannies.  Something off-white is a little more forgiving if you're not a cleaning fanatic.   A semigloss or flattened finish looks more OEM than a full gloss.

When I painted the poorly (red) painted frame my V7 Sport, I had the paint shop match the argent paint to an NOS Dellorto SS1 carb I had.  It's a familiar color on the bike so doesn't look out of place, much like red on Honda or bright green on Kawasaki.  I didn't want to go back to original black and am very happy with it.

A friend of mine painted his T-3 frame white and he regretted it almost immediately.  If you like a clean looking bike and don’t want to clean all of the time, avoid white. if it’s just a show bike with little street riding time, then white is your color.

I like the idea of brown/tan leather instead of a black saddle.

I wouldn't go white with the frame. silver would be better.

Was about to post how silly white would be then remembered my old 851SP2 Ducati and 888 Corse race bike both had white frames.

My CX frame is silver, much easier to live with that color.

851 and '91-'92 900SS trellis frames were works of art that need to stand out and looked great in white, as do the tube frame Buells. The Tonti frame doesn't stand out in the same way and needs to be part of a complete package. I did a tomato red framed guzzi with white bodywork and tied them together with red accents on the bodywork.
If your not going to tie them together then go subtle.
Blackcat nailed it.

Agreed, the Guzzi frame is just a piece of "structure" that doesn't benefit from contrasting. Its the engine and bodywork that make the Guzzi look not the frame.

Ok so adventurous wasn’t the right word.  I so appreciate the feedback. I was leaning towards a white frame but no longer.  My wife thinks putty color for the frame.  I’ll have to look that up.  Blackcat’s silver frame looks tremendous.  The engine will definitely be the focal point.

You're too easily scared by these curmudgeons.

If not white, then Red or Green - duh.

Red is the otherwise obvious choice.

The loose rule is to highlight the interesting or elegant things and minimise the dull or pedestrian parts. A Guzzi Tonti frame isn't a thing of beauty or elegance it's a piece of pedestrian structure and so the less visual impact the better. Guzzi for some models painted the Griso frame, which is semi unique a contrasting colour to highlight it as a "feature" until they decided it wasn't I guess.
