Title: How far on a tank of gas?
Post by: bad Chad on February 03, 2021, 06:21:12 PM
Yes, we all have opinions.  Modern Guzzi tanks hold from 4gallons on up to close to 7?    I'm happy with a range of 170-210 with my v9.

About 250 miles on the Victory Vision...and about 165 miles on the Centauro GT before RESERVE. :thumb:

Under perfect conditions it’s 500 km to dry.
(https://i.ibb.co/DYpsWkZ/D7-F7-D854-7-AF4-49-A0-BAD6-6829-A5-C86-FF0.jpg) (https://ibb.co/DYpsWkZ)

However in the real world with wind, safety margin etc..
A safe 400-420 km, then you’re starting to plan your stop..
On the Norge the light comes on at about 410 k and if I refill immediately, it’ll take 18 litres in a 23 litre tank.
The light on the V85 comes illuminates with 100 km to go. It used to come on ridiculously early so I fixed it.

Where I ride there is always a gas station within 20 miles.

I met a guy once on a brand new triumph bobber at a gas station in Cloudcroft, NM.  He bought the bike in El Paso and heading home to Carlsbad.  I asked why he was taking the long way home in the rain, and he said the bike didn't have enough range to get him home from El Paso.

Point being that range only matters if you don't have enough to get to the next gas station.

On the 3 1100s I’ve owned I knew I could get a solid 200 but I always started looking for fuel around 150 miles.

Stelvio NTX, 8 1/2 gallon tank means I can go 330-340 miles. The odometer automatically starts a new trip count with about 1 3/4 gallons left, and it does not affect the existing 2 trip odometers.

My Norge and my T-3 start looking for a fuel stop after 200+ miles. The T-3 has somewhat longer range. Now a days my bladder wants about a 100 mile range.

With a larger range, I'm still racing while you are in the pits filling your tank.
In other words, with a larger range, you can spend less time at gas stations for a given number of miles traveled.
Or think of it getting you there quicker without higher risk of speeding tickets.

I top off my bikes before putting them away.  I always need a break every couple hours anyway.  I don't mind having more range, but I don't let that be a deciding factor on non-touring bikes.

My  V7 Stornello went 430 km and on one tank . 18.5 L to fill after that ride. The book says  21 litre but  it's more like 20 litre useable on the V7s. That was on original 796 map . Heading down south next week  for the Burt Munro Rally
so will see how Beetles map compares.

Well in my experience not many people run their bikes till the engine stops due to lack of fuel. Is that the question?

The V9 has a surprising range for what looks like a small tank, it would run on the smell of an oily rag.

The low fuel light on my Cal comes on at around 150 miles. If I hit a gas station soon after it takes about 3.8 gallons.

Hi Chad,                                                                       2-4-21

About 200 or so on my Cali 1400 (5.5 gal OEM tank)...pretty much the same as your bike.  However, I installed a "pony tank" in one pannier...another 1.5 gal. minimum, so the max range is more like 250 with a quick stop to transfer from pony to OEM tank.

Be well, stay well,
DougG

Many decades ago, I was living\working in Hot Springs, AR. I often made the 200 mile ride to my hometown in NE AR to spend the weekend with family and friends. I could never break the 3 hr barrier until I got a bike that didn't need a fuel stop along the way.
I love fuel capacity. Even for my daily commute, I would rather not buy gas every three days.

I'd prefer a bike with a 1,000 mile range as long if I didn't have to carry 140lbs of fuel.

I have bikes with anywhere between 20L and 33L. I do like the bigger tanked bikes for less fuel stops.

For my current riding wants, needs and desires I'd be hard pressed to buy a bike without a 220 to 240 mile range.

Right at 200 miles as I found out this past summer. I ran out at 200. I was riding with a couple of friends when the light came on. When it comes on I usually have to add 3.7 gals to fill it back up. On this trip the light came on I did the math in my head and I should be able to make it to the next town with about 20 miles to spare considering how much the tank was supposed to hold. This was as I was passing a station. Well I ran dry a couple of miles short. One of my buddies brought me a 16 oz water bottle of fuel to make to the next town where I filled the tank. It took 4.7 gals to fill it. I still haven't figured this one out, the tank is supposed to hold 5.4 gals. 5.4 Gals at 40 mpg comes to 214 miles so something was wrong with my math or methods. Maybe the pump was wrong, not. I am a retired weights and measures official and when dispensers go out of tolerance it is usually in favor of the customer. The take away is make sure I get gas before 200 miles. This was on my 1400 Audace. I once had a R75/5 with the 6.3 gal tank, 300 miles easy.

I ran out of fuel 1800 feet from the gas station. Fuel counter said i had 10 miles to empty. You wanna know how I know it was 1800 feet? Well I had the GPS on my phone and and it kept letting me know 1800 feet to the nearest fuel 1750 feet to the nearest fuel and so on as I pooshed the bike on the berm of the road. Oh it was a good time. That 20l/5.3gal tank too over 6 gallons to fill up. I do drill the filler neck for a little added capacity.

When my low fuel light comes on, it will hold +/- 5 gallons, that is when I start looking for fuel, unless I am out in the boonies.
If I am running at highway speeds that's about 225 miles
if around town its about 170 miles.

On my V9 Bobber I consider my max miles to be 175. At close to that milage I start looking to fill up. This rule of thumb dose not come into play unless I am riding with a group and the days route calls for extra miles for the ride. On most of my solo day rides I average around 150 miles. I always fill up at a nearby station to home when I get back. Plenty satisfied with the capacity on the bike.

That’s interesting Earl. I also have an 02 Stone. With a complete tune up and beetle map when I got it, on the road a get a solid average of no less than 50 MPG which, if my math is accurate🤔 should render around 250 miles on the Stones tank? It sounds like you are getting hurt on your fuel mileage for some reason???

Generally max I go on a full tank:
220-230 miles Stornello
150-160 miles Convert
130-140 miles Griso
175-180 miles 1200 Sport
100-120 miles XS1100
I've gone further on all, but the best was my C10 Concours could eek out 300 miles.

I normally carry a 1 liter bottle of fuel just in case. Only need it when I don't have it....

Me too.  Going down with a guy from Auckland, meeting up at Christchurch.  Breaking the trip at Cromwell as he is still recovering from a major accident, otherwise I would do the trip in one go.

Predicted rain for the two days we are on the road.

I get 250 miles on the Breva tank (yup, she's in miles).

My Breva 750 was the same would fill  at 220 miles . Very sweet running engine and didn't need the long warm up the Mk2 V7 seems to need better with the new map though .
Thinking of pulling the pin on ride south this  next week as the west coast looks very wet and east coast not much better . Will do a west coast ride later in Feb unless things improve a lot .Seeing a few bikes coming through town making a run for Invercargill while the weather holds no doubt .

Shit loads.  5 gallon tank (proper gallons).  twice ive rolled into the petrol station with nothing about burning reserve.  Brilliant feeling untill you have to fill up an empty tank at £7 GBP a gallon,  ouch. Serious range.  I hate filling up, makes most tourers look pathetic.

Must be about a railroad that leads to a dam.

It's about the railroad built in Hetch Hetchy valley used to construct the dam that supplies water to San Francisco. It was a huge engineering feat... the dam and water pipeline that is 200 miles long. When the dam was completed they just filled it with water and left the tracks there. Some say it was as beautiful as Yosemite Valley (Hetch Hetchy is about 15 miles north of Yosemite Valley) and there have been suggestions to reclaim the valley which is pure insanity as the reservoiur supplies water to tens of millions of people.

I've ridden there on the Stelvio and didn't run out of gas.

I go dry at 250 miles on the T and 230 miles on the Mille. Both bikes hit reserve halfway, at about 120 miles.

In theory that's beyond my bladder capacity but I've done 200 miles at a stretch.

I really don't know, I have never ran out of gas. If I push the Norge on a good day I can go 225 miles before filling up. At this point I think I have about 1 gallon left.
My trip mileage usually is 47mpg but not always.
6 gallon tank that I fill while on the side stand.
I am not sure how much more gas I could get in the tank if I filled up on the center stand.
