Title: Realistically priced Honda on BaT
Post by: sdcr on February 05, 2021, 08:00:23 AM
This seems like a real world price for a tidy Honda CB 450. $4000, plus $250 for BaT.

Maybe the insane auction Prices have run the course on BaT?

I don't know about that.  Did you see the 71 Honda CB750 that went for 33K?

a different color that was a 750 in similar condition would have fetched $10k more easily. That's just not the 'right' Honda

That is a nice clean, '74 450...

However, if it had been the 1968 "Black Bomber" in that condition, I suspect it would have gone for a lot higher price.

I paid 3k for my 83 CB1000C which was a steal compared to prices of others I had found. These old Honda’s are very popular

Wow. I could see 33k for nice '69 sandcast. A former employer of mine bought 2 early CB750's . I got to ride one. meh...

I can think of about million things I would rather do with $4500.  Reminds me of WC Fields talking to the bartender:

Fields:  Joe, did I spend $20 here last night?

Bartender:  Yeah Bill, you sure did.

Fields:  Oh, that's a relief off my mind, I thought I'd lost it.

Bringatrailer is NOT the site to shop on if you want a bargain.

The clientele - the real buyers - not the surfers and commenters,
are largely fairly well-heeled. Some of them have annual disposable
incomes in the millions of dollars. If they really want something, they
cheerfully pay the freight.

For the seller, the site is terrific. One gets a targeted audience of knowledgeable
gearheads who have the money to pay for what they want. No tire kickers, time-wasters,
scammers, etc.. The customers appreciate maintenance records, attention to detail,
and honestly represented merchandise. BS artists are called out pretty quickly in the
comments section. It really is a seller's dream if they accept your vehicle.

I spent YEARS trying to get a fair price for my nearly perfect GB500. I got a
very fair price on the very first try at BAT. Yep - it cost me $99, but it was money
that was VERY well spent.

That said, some of these bidders can really skew the market. One GB500 went for
$16K! Yes, it was mint, low mileage, and had some rare aftermarket goodies, but
it went for WAY more than it should have. Of course, this sometimes happens at
auctions when there is a bidding frenzy!  On the other hand, looking at
average sale prices over time on BAT, it seems that in many cases the average comes
fairly close to the actual market value. Not always, to be sure - and in a lot of cases
the sample size is too small to draw any conclusions. (Exotica excluded.....some
of the one-offs are beautiful - and EXPENSIVE!!!)

I had one of those '74 CB450's in brown.  I got it out of a local fellas garage in '04, hadn't run in in two decades, it wouldn't "start" and eventually made it's way to the back of the guys garage.  It took the usual to get it roadworthy..tires, carb clean & valve adj, fork seals, o.c., and battery.  It cleaned up nice, very light surface rust was easily removed, chrome looked fine as was the paint.  I sold it in '12 for $1500 to make room for another bike.  I regret selling the 450, it was a cool bike imo.

Additionally I had a CB450 in '73 and sold in '74 for a Kaw Z1, got rid of that too. :violent1:
