Far Rockaway, Queens...We might be going there for a few days once the pandemic is lessened.. who's been there and what are your impressions? Is summer the time to go and are the beaches good or not? I'm not a surfer.
Or should we stay completely away from NYC ?

Similar to near Rockaway , just farther to travel .

Not to offend anyone-there is no reason to go there.

The first and last time I was there (1953) it was nice.....
-
No idea, but now I've got this Ramones song stuck in my head.

Water is cleaner on the Atlantic side of the island. Bronx Zoo is close by. Loads of food options.
-
The place is NYC, densely populated, wide variety of ethnic people, best food choices in the USA as mentioned, some areas maybe scary ....

Arm yourself!

It is on the South Shore, close to Jones Beach, just East of Brooklyn, and on the Queens/Nassau County border. Is mostly residential, nothing special. I'm from NYC, and though it may be a great base of operations if you are staying with family (free), I wouldn't pay to stay there ;-)
You are a 1.5-2 hour public transit ride and 45 minute drive to Manhattan, 30 minutes to Coney Island or Jones Beach. The barrier islands are unique, and the drive out to Robert Moses State Park is OK. There is a decent nature preserve on Broad Channel and that is a 'weird time warp' little town, but you are in the flight path of JFK, there is NOTHING in FR.
If you are doing the NYC thing, and paying, there are much better places to stay. Before you go, watch this no matter where you are staying ;-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6xd6YvoHLM

Why exactly did you pick Far Rockaway?
I haven’t been out there in years but if it’s the beach I’d pick another location as getting to this one will be a hellacious trip coming from Minnesota. But if you do go, I’d make it late summer as that part of the Atlantic doesn’t get reasonably warm until August or September.

wife wants to visit someone but I think I've talked her out of that. Thanks all.

If you're anywhere in NYC, IIRC you can take the A express train out to FR for a day visit. If your wife has never been on the NYC subway get a seat in the front car or better yet stand at the very front. You'll see stuff you'll NEVER find in MN.
-
My wife is FROM there. Nuff said.

Good or bad???

There are so many cool, fun, interesting places to visit in the northeast. Even within a hour of FR.. Streach it to 2 hours and you have anything you could want to see.

Densely populated blue collar mostly low rise residential area, predominantly black and carribean neighborhood. Good beach access with a boardwalk but beaches in the north-east are nothing to write home about outside of summertime, not much nightlife. Close to the airport, middling public transit options. Windy and cold right now thanks to it's peninsula geography.
