The only time I found myself legitimately worrying about an empty fuel tank, I was riding this uncomfortable Honda NC750X down some mountains near the Black Sea. In much of the U.S., we’re never far from a fuel station. However, my next planned multi-week riding trip is through Newfoundland & Labrador (fingers crossed on the border opening this summer), so I figured I’d get these just in case I decide to hang around the barren areas. It’s not likely, but that didn’t stop me from purchasing a pair of 1-gallon Rotopax fuel cans and mounting them to the bike.
After an hour’s worth of brainstorming with an engineer friend over how to modify a cutting board to make this system work, I realized that essentially no modifications were needed. Thanks to the spacers I use to extend the pannier racks out, one gas can fits inside, and the pannier rack is sandwiched between that and the cutting board. That gives me the option to do just one can with a saddlebag on the outside, or double up the mounts and pack an extra can.
AND—the cutting board has a handle, making it easy to carry both cans around.
I also use MSR fuel canisters, but these obviously hold more. Anyone else have pics of extra fuel storage on their Guzzis (or other bikes)?

I don't have photos but I know a guy who rode a Stelvio from north Georgia to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska with a normal 5 gallon plastic gas can bungee corded to the frame while resting on a passenger peg. This was a 2009 Stelvio, before they went to the larger tank.

They work in the panniers of a Cali 1400 as well.

When I took my Griso to the Arctic circle I strapped a 5L gas can on each pinion footrest, I sprayed them black to blend in.
I definitely needed the range it provided.
