I was born and raised under gas lights and new fangled pointy pointy ended glass bulbs - - But what the devil goes on when your best friend is being 'gas lighted'? TIA R3~

Gaslighting is lying to someone.. but in the specific way that you are trying to make them believe the issue was their fault, or twisting the facts to make the person you are lying to appear or feel crazy for challenging your version of events. Some combination of rationalization, manipulation, misdirection, obfuscation to shirk blame while placing the blame on the person you are misleading.
'You always do this'
'You're acting crazy over this and it's not even a big deal'
'You must have forgotten'
'I can't talk to you when you're hysterical'
'I only lie to you because if I tell you the truth you'll freak out like this'
'Your anger over this is irrational'

It's a form of psychological torture, sometimes referred to as "crazy making behavior",
The term comes from an old time movie about a guy trying to drive his wife crazy by screwing with her head. One of his tricks involved turning the gas lights on and off remotely, hence the name of the movie, it should be out there on Netflix or some other platform if you're into that type of thing, fyi.

The movie was based on an earlier British play , both titled Gas light .

It’s something I find very offensive. Having grown up with my dad doing that on a regular basis to me and my family. Politicians of BOTH parties engage in it on a regular basis. It insults my intelligence and logic. In personal conversation I ignore the attempts of others and hammer home whatever point they are trying desperately to obfuscate. That usually infuriates the person nicely.

My family is great at it. It was considered “humorous “.
I had to learn how not to. It’s an ongoing struggle.
I mastered in sarcasm, very closely related.
For example,...
Friend pumps kickstarter several times, pauses w no result.
Me. “Still can’t get that crap to run?”
Ouch.
“Can I help?”, comes to mind as a direct expression
Head up, rubbery side down, Roebling
