Title: Remember Your 1st Motorcycle ?
Post by: kballowe on March 31, 2021, 07:13:22 AM
I bought my first motorcycle, brand-new in 1971 - at the ripe old age of 13, with money I made from hay work, lawns, or whatever else I could get.

Rode that thing everywhere.  I remember putting cardboard in my jacket on the colder days.

 :bike-037:

This is the exact bike that I had.

This was mine. ‘78 Honda 125.  I rode the pants off of it.  A Hooker Header ensured that the neighbors knew about it.

YES!  Age 14...a used 1965 Yamaha YG1-K 80cc Rotary Jet that my dad bought me for $125.

This "nut & bolt" restored example, (mine was just like this!!),  was seen in SOCAL many years ago, and the owner wanted $6,000 for it!!      - - so of course, I passed.

First bike was 196? Yamaha 50cc step thru, don't know model maybe U5 or something. There was a hill near the house where I could get it up to 47mph. Siezed that engine at least three times on that hill, stripped it down sanded out rough spots in cylinder and on piston, back together and running. I knew nothing about engines or anything mechanical. I was fourteen in 1965, bought it from neighbor for $90.00 sold in 1969 for $100.00. Rode that sob everywhere!

Motorcycles were verboten by my parents, therefore I had to wait until the age of independence, 18.  I then went out and bought with the help of the bank, a brand new 1974 Honda CB750.

CB160, at age 16 in 1969. I note that many here started on small displacement bikes, learning the basics before moving up. We learned caution, conservation of speed, how to stay out of the way of other traffic, how to plan ahead for maneuvers......all of the skills that have allowed us to survive to senior citizen status. Unlike today, when many inexperienced riders go out and buy a 100HP 600cc sportbike as their first.

Royal Enfield Flying Flea. Found in a farmer's hedge, appropriately close to a wartime SOE airfield, in about 1962.

1980 in nuclear power school at the base in Orlando FL. I was 19 years old. My buddy let me ride his Honda 400 super sport all over the base to learn how to ride street bikes. He didn't have a car, so I'd loan him my 1978 Mustang fast back. (Best looking Pinto ever made with a V6!) It really became a passion for me so I sold the car and got a minty 78 Honda CX500. That was a pretty amazing bike. I'd even ride it to the beach at Daytona two up on weekends. 41 years later, still riding a bit and love bikes.

Mine was a KLR650. I had never ever been on a bike before, but knew I wanted to. I drove a few hours with a trailer to see an almost brand new one. I got on it, and drove it around the seller's big property, somehow not stalling or dropping it, and brought it home. After that, I took a riding class, and started riding it.

Remember it?  Of course!  1963 BSA Spitfire Scrambler.  Unfortunately, this is my only photo of the bike, across the 4 lane boulevard from the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston WV.  Feb 1966.  Quite a jump from riding my buddy's Whizzer, Motobecane, Allstate (Vespa,) and Mustang.

Not counting a Garrelli moped with a Honda 50cc engine crammed in it, my first was a 1971 Honda CL175.  I wish I had a picture but that was well before digital cameras and film was too expensive for that.

Bought my first bike 10 years ago, a ‘77 KZ400. Spent way more time wrenching than riding, but lots of learning, too (vacuums, lean/rich, cleaning carbs, sourcing non-Moto bits like radiator hoses as substitutions, points, etc.). Loads more yet to learn.

Before I could have a license, I got a Twin Jet 100 Yamaha.  I drove a friend and his Super 90 Honda crazy when we'd race.  His older sister was dating (later married) a fellow who ran a speed shop and were tweaking the Honda with overbore, cam, carb, etc and never could better the 100.  Fun days!  Picture is from the internet as I don't believe I have anything from the mid sixties and as a 14 year old, one doesn't think in the long term or in heritage mode!

Bought my first "real" motorcycle in 1955 when I was old enough to get a license. I went to a dealer in Devon, PA to test ride an Ariel single that I had my eye on. Bike wouldn't start so I went to the HD dealer in Pottstown and became the owner of a used 1946 model EL. Never looked back!!

A Honda 400 twin. A ‘78 I think. Only two years younger than me! My parents would not hear of me having a motorcycle until I was an adult. I first got a non-running Honda 360CL for like $200. I just rode around the pastures with it. The 400 was my first street bike. I enjoyed that bike greatly. Rode all over eastern PA with that bike before moving on to “bigger and better”. Only things was, didn’t find anything quite as enjoyable until my Quota.

My Dad (initially) forbid me to have a motorcycle, all the while telling me how dangerous a motorcycle is, blah blah blah.

And then..... I found a picture in one of the family photo albums with him sitting on a 1950 Indian.  Turns out, wasn't his 1st motorcycle, either.  There were more photos in there.  I casually slid them over to him at the supper table that night.  We went to the motorcycle dealer the next day.

Saved my pennies from lawn cutting and the sale of a mini bike and bought a Yamaha 80 when I was 14.
I had 2 older brothers that broke my parents in on early onset motorcycle ownership so they were cool wth it.
Man I thought I had a race bike only I enjoyed off roading it. 3 trail gears and 3 street. Still not sure they were any different but it was cool.
Homemade expansion chamber from my brother and a new seat cover from mom.
See it WAS a family affair!

In the spring of 1977 I was working at a car wash. Bud offered to sell me his Suzuki 150 for $150. It was not running. I took him up on it. Someone had painted "Smokey"  on the side covers. I was able to get it running and I used it for over a year before I broke the generator / regulator. Every other bike that I have owned has been better than Smokey.

http://vintage-suzuki.com/product/1975-suzuki-rm125s/

Bought brand new in August 1976 aged 16 and cost NZ$1448.67 (iirc) after a $300 deposit and HP.
A RM125S model with factory revised cylinder and Mikuni VM34. (unlike the lower horsepower M version)
Most of it is in boxes along with a couple of spare engines and would be rare in the US as in the link.

That was followed a 1974 Kawasaki 250 S1B triple (250cc limit for newbies) in 1977, a Triumph 500 and a 1974 Kawasaki H2B 750 in 1980 (which I still have)

16 yo then poof, in your 60's. ?

I still remember signing paperwork or something at the dealership (Colmans Suzuki on K Rd)
The sales dude is filling out stuff and asks if I had ridden a motorcycle, I said I had ridden a Puch scooter (3 speed shift on the left hand grip) and a Motobecane moped at the local dirt track a few times (and now buying a 5 speed piston port MX bike)

He looked up and said "OK good luck with that and carried on.

A few years later I was test riding the H2B (dealership) and could not hear what the dude was saying before I pulled away (He was saying first was up N-1-2-3-4-5)
I could not get into first ? so shifted up into 2nd and used appropriate rpms for a 2nd gear start (it was in first gear)
It made for a fairly radial entry (wheel in the air) to the world of Kawasaki H2's.
When I got back from round the block test ride the salesman was still laughing.

Not really a motorcycle, but it was great - Puch Monza 50cc:

Sadly I have no pictures of the actual bike.
I got it from a guy who had some crashes and retrofitted it with a larger fuel tank and painted it in a hideous but somehow appealing neon-blue color.
Hey, it was the 80s ;)

Still ran great for what it was, and I hate myself for selling it.

Cheers,
D.

My 1973 RD200 was already a couple of years old when it became my first "real" bike. (I had a Honda Z50A before that.)  Exciting acceleration once it hit the power band. I found out quickly that the powerful front drum could easily lock the ribbed tire. I learned to never leave the house without spare spark plugs. (We had a foul relationship.)
Pic is not mine but identical model and colour. If I remember right the alternator and starter motor were one and the same!

I had the silver one with every factory accessory and several aftermarket ones.

I still have my 78 SX 750 and 79 XS1100. Have owned the XS11 since 1984. Both are tucked in storage since 2013..... Waiting refresh and return to the street when I retire.

My mom and dad were not keen on bikes so I had to wait until I got a real job and moved out on my own. Then I went against  everyone's advice and bought this.

That led to an obsession that was only recently broken. My V85TT was the first non-Ducati street bike I had bought since 1995. I got an RSV-R for a track bike a few years bak too but ended up selling it cuz we just didn't bond...
