Title: 2013 Norge Coil test/issue
Post by: NWrider on April 01, 2021, 02:50:58 PM
My 2013 Norge dropped the right cylinder just after fueling up.  Spark plug was wet showing it was getting fuel from the injector.   The plug has continuity so I believe it's OK.  So, I've tested the coil but I need some help interpreting the results:

Multi tester set on 200 Ohms probes on the two prongs from the connector to the wiring harness = 2.3 Ohms
Multi tester set on 20k Ohms probes between each prong and the plug cap shows the same reading of 8.1
Multi tester set on 20k Ohms probes on each end of the plug wire (removed from the coil itself) = 4.85

The only reference I have is that the primary winding resistance should be 550 mOhms +/- 10%
Secondary winding resistance should be 3 mOhms +/- 10%
and the plug wire resistance should be 5k Ohms.

My guess is that the plug wire itself is OK but how about the readings on the coil?????
*** Changed megOhms to mOhms after double checking the service manual.  My question remains though.

Provided your Norge is like my EVT when it comes to the coils and spark plug wires.

If you take a multi meter and measure the resistance from the spark plug cap to ground on the frame or engine. You should read aprox. 8K ohms. Aprox. 3 for the coil and 5 for the spark plug cap.

I would then take THE spark plug in question and see if it will spark by CAREFULLY holding it against the engine while holding the rubber spark plug boot. Even if it sparks, the plug could be bad. But at least you know there is spark to the plug or maybe not.

Good luck,
Tom

And how do those readings compare to the other coil ?  Peter

Thanks for the input.

I took the plug from the Norge and plugged it into the plug wire on my DR650 grounding the edge of the plug to the cylinder.   It had good spark --- I was surprised, however, that the DR started up as soon as I hit the starter -- even though the plug wire was at least 3" away from the DR's plug and firing the Norge's plug as well.   Since I've "summerized" the Norge and am heading back to the PNW,  I just removed the coil and will test it further when I get home.

Unless you have an earlier Norge with two plug heads, on those the secondary is not grounded.
But you should be able to measure from the inner to outer plug cap, I'm guessing 8 - 10 Ohms
Same both sides.
If you find a coil open its probably that nasty carbon core HT cable, I hate that stuff, copper core with a resistor cap is much better IMHO
