Like other things in general, check it out and see if it makes sense. I don't use a GPS but use maps instead.

Meh. The writer doesn't seem to have an understanding of mercator projection.
Personally I like mercator having grown up using it. Easy to use. I navigated across the Atlantic several times in my younger years. Went north by the fabled distorted lands and found that all was well. Navigated the wine dark sea of the Ionian and the Adriatic. Made it thru the Straits of Gibraltar a few times. Out of the Carib and into the gulf stream to carry me northeast then east. Great circle route from the eastern U.S. to Gib. No gps in those days. Just those dang inaccurate mercator projection charts. How did I survive.

Considering we have satellite mapped the entire planet , it would seem we have a pretty good idea of how large each continent is , hell , we have an accurate map of Bishop Rock .
