A guy from a fb group has been asking me about an Eldo he's been looking at buying. He's a BMW guy and new to Guzzis, so he's uncertain. The seller is asking what I consider to be a very fair price (the buyer would prefer to leave that info and the location private, as he doesn't want someone swooping in and buying it out from under him,) but he's concerned about confirming that the cylinders have been done, etc. I figured that, if someone here recognizes it or knows where it was done (maybe Moto Guzzi Classics, Cycle Garden, or Antietam,) then that would give him some peace of mind.

Wow, I'm surprised that I didn't catch that. You're right, no eagle on one side.

Tell him to look at the base of the cylinders directly below the plug for the Gilardoni mark.
If it looks like this it has Nikasil cylinders and should have new pistons since they are part of the kit and be good to go.
I see there are now different brands available from MG Cycle, I have no idea how they are marked.

Could have had the original pistons and cylinders sent to millennium technologies for plating, and there would be no mark. He'll have to ask the seller.
One clue, the cylinder patina is different from the cylinder head. It could be nothing, but it's a clue.

I think you nailed it, looks just like mine with cylinders replaced about 5 years ago.

This was something that I pointed out to him, as well. Not a foolproof way to tell, but gives you an idea.

Those are quite the floorboards! I don't think I have ever seen any like that.
Regarding the cylinders- in the absence of clear information, the buyer should consider whether buying the bike + set of pistons/cylinders is still a fair price. Swapping them out isn't too difficult.

Not all Gilardonis have the cast in name between the fins. If there's any question about what the cylinder bore material is, the magnet test will give a simple, accurate answer in just minutes.

If I remember correctly, very light magnetism indicates Nykosil, right?

Easier to search if it's spelled correctly
I think it's very popular for dirt bikes, according to Stan you can seize it and not do any real damage.

I'm sure a long time mechanic like you must have struck it lots of times, maybe know it under a different name. Mongoose can do it.

Nikasil is short for Nickel Silicon Carbide. Silicon carbide is a very hard ceramic (much harder than steel) that can be dissolved in nickel. The nickel solution can then be electroplated onto the aluminium cylinder bore

No magnetic attraction = chrome, very slight = Nikasil/Nigusil, strong = iron liners.
