I just don't get the BMW thing...
I have only owned one, and perhaps i was just unlucky enough to get the Shitz model, IDK
but it was bad enough that i have never really looked at the brand again.
I had a late 70's R75/6 and it was an ok-ish bike, reliable and boring unless you pushed it, but then it was just scary.
it had 4 major faults in my opinion. The first issue was that the bike has a carb directly over each of the riders feet, and thus your shoes constantly stink of gas. The second issue is the fact that the transmission shifts like a box-O-rocks, no matter how carful you are while shifting, it's all ways "clunk"... third and probably the worst fault was that BMW equipped the bike with the infamous Jack-O-Matic shaft drive system.. i quickly learned to NEVER modulate the throttle in a corner, as the result was a instant change in direction...
The last "fault" is subjective but, it's NOT a good looking machine...
this coupled with the typically "premium" prices,
naaw, i think the (insert any brand) is a better value...

Yup.... exactly like that bike, but i think mine was a 75 or 76...right before many things went plastic...
$11K LOL....
-
The mechanic that works on it is a Bumble Bee tuner....

I have always liked he early ones like this because the seat is not way up high, although, I think the gearbox shifting issue would be enough to discourage me.
I think I would prefer a Quota myself.

I have a bunch of bikes for an equally diverse set of reasons, many of which are about the designers art, the way it sounds and other subjective stuff. However I’ve also had three R100GSs and if you forced me to choose one bike for the rest of my life to ride, to maintain, travel on, carry passengers on, sport ride on, trail ride on and everything else you can do on a motorcycle, a bumblebee R100GS would be it. The only choice would be pre ‘90 or ‘91-on.

Tusayan, I totally agree. I bought my 1991 R100GS Bumblebee in March of 1991. Still own and ride it (her!) 161,000 miles later. A great bike when new and now, in 2021.

Same year as the one I put a bazillion miles on. Was looking for an old Guzzi at the time (would have been my first), the /5 turned up and delayed my entry into Guzzidom about 6 more years. But they were good years!!

I like this "modified" R75/5 also...nicely done...and this would be fun to blast around the neighborhood! :thumb:

These older Beemer's set up like this, are so much lighter and more nimble, (IMHO), than the newer heavier R1250GS models... :thumb: :boozing:
Here is another nice example...

I got to beat up on an R80/GS like this for sale in CO $15,000. I like it better than the R100/GS. Lighter. I have a picture somewhere of the bike standing upright by itself in a just harvested muddy hay field. It's resting on the hard cases.
I played in the field and it didn't let me down going through mud. :thumb:
https://www.smartcycleguide.com/L49487354 JJ maybe you could post the pix of this bike.
-
Tom, that bike probably isn't any lighter than an R100GS, since it (from the pic) is essentially an R100GS Bumblebee with smaller cylinder bores. Now the original R80G/S (early to mid 1980 era) probably is lighter and more agile, but that's not this bike.
whoww! How much are they asking $$$$$ ?????

Can't remember the year that I rented. The next year, I was on a Blue & white R100/GS. Both owned by Herr Himmler and not that Himmler.

BID to $11,111...and DID NOT SELL!!

Are both the sellers and buyers crazy? I mean, for Gawd's sake. I purchased my 1991 R100GS with bags and tank bag in 1991 for roughly $7100.00.
And people are asking (and paying) $10-11k for these old ADV bikes?
Mine looks pretty good considering it has over 160k miles on the odometer. And yes, the bike has had a lot of the wear parts replaced (driveshaft, starter motor, bean can, rear shock ..... on and on.
But who is going to pay over $10k for one of these old Beemers? Great bikes .... but not worth that kind of cash. (Unless they know something I don't know!!)

If you check BaT, you’ll find that some have been selling for more than that, actually quite a few of them.

The one that amazes me most is the 520 mile R100GS PD for… brace yourself…. $43,000 dollars plus buyers fee.

Look no further than the MG 1000S. It was an outdated overpriced parts bike when it was introduced and now they bring money like they are made of gold.
Why do these bikes bring these prices? Because at least two people want them.
-
I have a Quota. I had a 93GSPD for 19 years. I had a VStrom. I got the VStrom because I wanted something more modern. Loved the bike. Sold it after 8 years . Bought the Quota because I got a smoking deal on it. In the scheme of things the Quota is way more simplistic than the GSPD. It has been cheaper to operate. It gets much worse gas mileage. I sold my GSPD for $7500 8+/- years ago. It was in excellent condition with upgrades in the electrical, brakes, suspension and ton's of other stuff.
Gspd is just a special bike.

This beauty was seen at the Datil, NM Guzzi Rally in August 2013.  :thumb:
It was a complete "nut & bolt" restoration...and reportedly SOLD for $20,000+...I wonder what it would bring on BaT these days?!?

Some of my retirement funds are in both 1000S bikes that I own.   :thumb:

If its a retirement plan I'd sell now. The market has never been stronger and isn't gonna stay that way. With restrictions being eased and people heading back to the office time for recreation will lessen. In the not too distant future there will be a glut of "toys" on the secondary market and the bottom is going to fall out.
I've been selling stuff even though I'd prefer not too. However the the prices stuff is bringing I cannot not sell.
Actually thinking of selling my personal truck since new trucks are delayed because of some computer chips or somethgin like that. At work we are on a 10 to 15 week waiting list for F150's and Transits. Its driving up the used market.
