Im thinking of strapping a bag to the passenger seat, and riding 300 miles on my old 1971 CB 750 Honda Chopper , to the CB750 World Chopper meetup in Ferguson, North Carolina the end of June INSTEAD of going to the Italian Bike weekend at Two Wheels of Suches, in Suches Ga. I have no idea if my old chopper would make it the 300 miles one way....and then back....but what an adventure that would be!! Whoop Whoop!!!!!

Looking at your bike - 300 miles should be just fine...Just go easy on her, and you should make it OK! :thumb:
-
DO IT !

Might be more comfortable if you trailer it to within about 30 miles
Go for it! and bring pics back.
-
Better than even money on the chopper making it.
But, I'd have to bet against your tush surviving the round trip. Lol
I DO like the way you think though, Bob!! :thumb:
-
Bob, if you decide to do this give me a shout out as you will be in my neck of the woods, it could be an interesting and successful adventure 👍

Where do you live again Dan?

That sounds like a wonderful trip Bob. And yea, takes lots of photos.

Take the appropriate roads and work in enough rest stop time (with time to discuss the bike with admirers) and you should do fine. 300 miles at an average of 45 mph is under 7 hours in the saddle. Add in a 15 minute break every 90 minutes plus a lunch break and you have a 9 hour day. You could easily fit in more/longer breaks and still be riding in daylight.
-
Just a thought, take a riding buddy (or two) and rotate bikes every hour or so.
Hell, you could probably sell tickets for a chance to pilot that period piece of nostalgia !! :bike-037:
-
Oh, DEFINITELY DO IT!
Report back with LOTS of pics.
Those old fours were nothing if not reliable.
Clean the points, lube the chain, check the oil
and tires, and roll.
As others have said - you can ride and take a break
for 10-15 minutes every hour. Even if you took 2 days,
it would be a COOL trip!

Hey, Bob I would have someone drive a support vehicle just to ease the shear terror/disappointment that may happen. AND carry extra stuff.
-
I fired her up today....one step closer to possibly running to the World Honda Chopper Get Together in June. Whoop Whoop. Shake down ride about 50 miles one way for a lunch run and see how she is running will be next.... Man Im crazy!! lol.
-
Just think of the ride as 30 ten mile jaunts , or 10 thirty mile jaunts , or 15 twenty mile jaunts , or... well anyway , you understand

:thumb: Wish I was retired. I would load the Guzzi in the trailer and follow you. I would love to go see all those choppers and talk to the enthusiasts. You never know, one might have ended up in the trailer for the ride home. LOL!

Air pressure in the rear tire?

Air pressure in the rear tire?
About 40psi if I remember correctly. Why??
-
Run it lower. Hardtail right? The rear tire becomes part of the suspension. Your kidneys will love you for it. :thumb:

The question is, do you have faith in the guy that built it. :bike-037:

Bob's bike has a plunger frame I believe it is called.
There is a photo of it in this thread

You are bound to meet some fascinating characters at a chopper event. Some of those guys built the bikes from scratch, the old timey way. Have fun!
-
Heres a picture of its rear end (I dont say that every day!) Its quite the setup. Not the most comfortable motorcycle (I have a 2010 Goldwing for comfort) but it is a hoot to ride in my opinion once you get used to it.

Amen Savior frame. About 2" of travel in the back. I would run 30PSI in the back tire.
Larry
-
If you can take it, make it! TWOs can wait till next year.
-
My mistake....im running 32 psi in the back and 32 in front on the chopper. I had it written down. Which is a good thing as old as im getting. lol
-
Couldn't tell it was a Plunger frame from 1st pix. Lower air pressure in the rear tire would let the rear tire slow the rebound since you already have a spring on the frame. Try 25lb. Check the tire after doing sprints on the highway for condition. I had a hard tail and would run 15-20lb. The rear Continental tire was the suspension.

I worry about heat and the rear tire if i go to low of pressure......Cours e, like my wife says,,,i worry about everything!
-
Do 45" to 1 hour sprints. You should be okay. :thumb:

Bob, run it at what is comfortable for you. Carry a heat gun with you and check periodically if you want to lower the pressure below where you have it. If it is not beating you up, then keep it where you run it now.
Lower pressure is not recommended for higher speeds.
-
Y'ep, 55mph in the day on highways and for short sprints.
-
Bob, always remember what Mark Twain said,
"I've had many troubles in my life. Most of which never happened."

I am NOT a fan of 80's music but thought this was a good theme song for my up-coming trip on the old Honda CB750 chop, to the Honda Choppers meet inNorth Carolina the end of June. Oh and RIP to Tawny Kitaen who was the model/80's star in the video and other video's etc. Holy HAIR Batman!

Yes, it's all in our heads. Our over-active mind is the real problem. Very Zen actually.

Crawl, walk, run.
Make it to the chopper meet first. LOL!

Lol. I have to put a new front tire on the chopper (Its too old) and synch the carbs. If I can get that stuff all done before the 23rd of June, the mission may be a "GO"!

Where in Ferguson is the World Choppers event being held? Blink and you'll miss it, I'm not sure they even have a traffic light there.
High Country Motorcycle Camp? They cook some great meals on site. Book a cabin if you can.

I once rode 650 miles to Oklahoma with an older relative & he had 25 lbs in his rear tire on an R90S BMW. He rode the entire country like that including 2 up with his woman. He said anything above that uses too little rubber on the road & wore the tires out in the center faster. He never had problems.

I’ll bet those tires weren’t at 25 lbs once heated up.
