Title: Slingshot, indeed!
Post by: JJ on May 30, 2021, 10:27:53 AM
These were awesome, high performance bikes made by Suzuki in the late 80's.   :thumb:

Still very capable even by today's standards!! This one is in very fine condition.

Most were flogged and trashed on the racetrack.

Two wheel rocket ship!! :thumb:  :boozing:

I don't see an issue with the name " Slingshot ".  It describes what you are in for.

Here are some names that are much worse-
Hummer
Swinger
Probe
Escort

 Polaris might take exception .

Polaris can... but Suzuki beat them to the punch by over two decades. I don't care for the aesthetics of these sportscar/trikes, nor do I "get it". I suppose I should drive one before I pass judgement.

It appears that Suzuki put the name on some of the 750's from that year , something I was unaware of not having ever paid much attention to sportbikes .

Being in the Suzuki 1200 Bandit hobby, the Gen 1 bikes were supposed to wake up with installation of the 750 "slingshot" head.  I have no idea where the name came from.  OTOH the OEM Bandit has good ol' lock nut valve adjusters just like a Guzzi.

I raced one (750) back in the day, as always I was late to the party, they were outclassed immediately by the Honda RC30, I plugged away with it in 88 & 89 and we had it going pretty well but not well enough unfortunately

Suzuki did (does?) make a SlingShot - which I believe is a 250cc home market bike. Not sure if they ever called the Gixxer that, but they are equipped with Mikuni RS 36mm 'slingshot' carbs, which I discovered rebuilding the same carburetors on my D9 triple. Searching GSX-R bits was far easier than trying to find the same parts for a 1996 Triumph.

Second gen GSXR's were all slingshots. 1100 and 750. had something to do with the carbs appearance. I remember guys swapping the 750 and 1100 engines.

If I were to go the Japanese superbike road, I have a weak spot for team green.

In the end, the ol' SLINGSHOT sold for $7400 + 5% Buyers Premium... :thumb:  :boozing:

I think that's a fair price actually....I've been following these and I'd like to add one to the garage....Looking for a '88-'92 GSXR.  These are what started it all for me.  I'd love to find a 1990 1100cc but would consider a 750 in this year range if anyone has one sitting around.  They're getting very rare....especially in decent condition!
