Title: It’s too hot!
Post by: Canuck750 on June 26, 2021, 11:21:02 AM
My wife and I are on our first post lockdown ride touring the British Columbia south interior, all mountains and lakes but heck it’s too hot! Record temps and hotter to come, expecting 100 - 110F throughout southern B.C. and Alberta. This is almost as hot as riding in Arizona this time of year.

But down here " it's a dry heat"  Our monsoon season hasn't really started yet.

82 degrees right now in the ol' VOC with 23% humidity.  Some spotty drizzling of rain also... :thumb:

We really, REALLY need the MONSOON rains in July / August this year....badly!!

I'm waiting for Monday ( even hotter , I understand) and am going for a ride up the Sea to Sky to test my newly
made handlebars and risers for my 2018 Eldorado, that should sweat off some of these - pounds  . Peter

So’s my oven.  Honestly, I’d rather have cold than 95+ degrees.  Sucks the life outta me.

Having lived in AZ most of my adult life, yes, temperatures over 100 degrees will "suck the life out of you!"...but it is a "dry heat"...and yes, that means like a "BAKE OVEN!!"

However, in the Mid-Hudson Valley in upstate NY, where I was born and raised, 95 degrees with 90% humidity, will also, drain the energy right out of you!

I, for one, do not miss the bone-chilling, cold, wet WINTERS of that part of the northeast....That is equally as dreadful...

Everything is relative. Here in subarctic we hit 28C (+) today. Way too hot for me or the dogs.
Rode the Tagish loop this morning (circa 300km) and could feel the sun baking through my leathers... not 'cool' in either sense.
Hope the weather moderates for everyone regardless of their conditioning.
... and you Arizona people: Plus 45 must be a myth. No one could survive in that heat. See you at minus 50.

28c/82f might not sound too hot for dogs, unless they are not used to it.
Wet them down, keep a fan on them. Plenty of drinking water too.

We're into August weather already with 95F temps and 90+ humidity - ugh. I took off the CalSci big windscreen and installed my recently cut down OEM screen. Really improves air to the upper body and almost no turbulence.

It got up to 105 here yesterday. The temperature in the house was 91. The dogs didn't do well. Supposed to be close to that again today. I don't ever remember temperatures in this range in the 20+ years I have lived here.

It was 40+ (104) in Vancouver yesterday we are just not used to it getting that hot, supposed to be same again Monday, a wet towel round my neck saved the day.

I rode up to the lake yesterday. It was 103 when I left at about 2:00. It was 105 when I got home at 5:00. The altitude at my house is about 3,800', 5,000 at the lake. It was a cool 85 at the lake.

It is way too hot to ride, or even be outside.

It is 108 in Olympia, on the water, except that the tide is out.

What rotten smell! And our garden is very unhappy.

Will water again tonight for another three hours...

109 here just now in Grand Forks BC, or 43 C. I have been doing my riding before 10 a.m., and it has been pretty decent.

I've lived in Phoenix for 3 yrs, and now in the northeast, and one July I had to drop my kid off at West Point (Hudson valley) for a hockey camp and it was over 100 deg with high humidity.......I really think that felt worse than a 110-deg day in Phx.

When it's 100+ degrees in the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix), the humidity is usually only around 10-12%...which means "Dry Heat"...but it's still HOT!!

Out in the southern end of the Mojave Desert, it's 117 or so pretty much every day now. That should last till mid-September.

This time of year, I plan my rides by how quickly I can be at altitude and stay there as long as possible. Just going to the top of the hill near my home can reduce the temp by 10-15 degrees F!

Did I mention Louisa and I are thinking about getting a summer place up on Vancouver Island or the Sunshine Coast? It may get hot there more often now, but the Coachella Valley will always be even worse!

IN THE YEAR 2525....IF MAN IS STILL ALIVE....🥵

How unusual is this heat wave?
"Unprecedented" does not do it justice. Statistically speaking, this would be a once-in-a-1,000-year occurrence in a normal climate. But our climate is no longer normal: it is being heated by human-caused climate change. So these once nearly impossible heat waves will become not only possible, but more probable, in the coming years and decades.

When I build the house on the river all my neighbors gave me the same advice first thing.
“Get a good high capacity dehumidifier in your basement, first thing”
It pumps gallons a week out!

Just for perspective, we just returned from 3 nights in the Cardiff-by-the-Sea / Encininas / Carlsbad area of the Pacific Coast.

The temperature never fluctuated between 65 degrees and 75 degrees, day and night!!!
It was lovely...and the ocean breezes were refreshing!! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I cannot afford to live in SOCAL, but it sure was nice to walk along the ocean in my bare feet!  7.5 hours one way drive from Vortex-Land!  Well worth the drive and visit... :boozing:

Got back from our weeks ride through the furnace of southern British Columbia, yesterday’s ride from Kelowna to Lake Louise varied between 37C / 98F and 41C / 106F, it was 39C in Lake Louise yesterday and this morning the bikes side stand had sunk about 1-1/2” into the asphalt, lucky the bike didn’t tip over. I brought a cooling vest that my wife wore and I soaked my t shirt in cold water, we repeated that about every 90 minutes along the way and went through bottles of water one after another. Not a pleasant ride! I was more worn out after five hours in the heat than I have been after a ten hour day on the bike. Bike ran flawlessly.  I think being a water cooled engine probably faired better than my previous air/oil head Beemer. Lytton British Columbia broke all time Canadian heat records three days in a row topping off at 49.5C/ 120F and yesterday was wiped out by a forest fire, tragic, and it’s still only spring.
To top it off our AC at home has gone on the fritz.

If this is what climate change has in store for us it’s not going to be pretty.

Hot also here. Last days between +27C - +29C (night times +17C -  +19C). At this summer we have already had almost 50 days over +25C. Normally the same is about half of that (about 21 to 25days) ... and that's for whole summer seasons.

Ha, Ha, We had a billboard along the highway here that said:  "You think it's Hot now, just keep using my name in vain."

Get ready for the milking to begin it's only going up, till it freezes.

Even at 5700 feet it's too hot here starting around 9am. I've been getting up at dawn to ride, and do yard work. Back in the house by 9.30 and then out again around 8pm. Temp drops to 60F overnight. Today we have forest fire smoke, another climate affliction.

I've always hated heat. You can always add layers in the cold but the reverse ain't true. Heat is tolerable only if I'm underwater.

Here in "Vortex-Land" (aka, Sedona), we are at 4500 feet, and it will be 104 degrees today! ("WHEW!!") At least it drops down to the 70's at night, but that is still too hot!  Thankfully, the humidity is relatively low, but we are all awaiting MORE monsoon rains in the next few weeks, as we really need the moisture!

Its still been around 90F all this week and the forecast for next week is hotter, it NEVER gets this hot for this long this far north in western Canada, and the heat dome of the previous week saw temperatures over 105F for days.

All this week I have been working outside building a deck for one of my sons, big straw hat and wearing a Cycle Gear Cooling Vest saturated with water all day to stay somewhat cool. No rain is sight.

Forest fires are starting to spring up all over the west from record lightning strikes, we are in for a tough summer!
