Title: Ivar de Gier new article(!?)
Post by: moto on July 08, 2021, 08:50:56 PM
Longtime members will remember the name of Ivar de Gier, a Guzzi historian with strong ties to the factory, a very large collection of historical Guzzis, and possibly an intention to write a definitive history of the marque.

Here is an article from this spring bearing his byline: https://amcn.com.au/editorial/100-years-of-moto-guzzi-2/
 (https://amcn.com.au/editorial/100-years-of-moto-guzzi-2/).

I was surprised to see this, being under the impression he had passed away. It is a small article, but it does have a few points that were new to me at least, and some very nice pictures. In particular the pictures of the Guzzi factory floor in which each bike was assembled on a separate bench were interesting.

Nice article.  Ivar contributed a huge amount to maintaining the history of Guzzi.

A couple of minor nits with the article might be that as I understand it the factory location was picked on the basis of where Parodi senior owned land (I didn’t think it was Carlo Guzzi’s home town) and the Centauro was not to my knowledge designed by Miguel Galuzzi - he worked for Cagiva in the 90s.

Had to look it up but you are correct, sir. Luciano Marabese designed the Centauro.  Galuzzi designed the Ducati Monster.

Ivar has ties to New York. His wife is from there. Guzzi friends there are the godparents to Ivar and Amy's children.

Some time ago, I went to one of the New York Guzzi breakfasts where he gave us a 3 hour talk and slide show about the history of Guzzi. At one time, and perhaps still, a number of the bikes in the museum in Mandello belong to Ivar. He, his father, and grandfather, were personal friends of Carlo and would be welcomed into the factory any time they stopped by. His telling of the history of the company was nothing short of amazing. Little things that never make it into the history books. He and his family are among the nicest folks I have ever had the privilege of meeting. At the time, the kids were pretty young and I was amazed just how well they behaved sitting in a small restaurant while he regaled us with all sorts of tidbits about Guzzi.

That was some time ago, over 16 years at least. North Java, NY with the Casey boys among others. It was a fine presentation. Ivar is extremely knowledgable of Guzzis. I was fortunate enough to have made it and meet him.

A very nice article, with some glaring omissions among the last few decades - notably, the CARC bikes are not even mentioned.

I don't think that is an article by Ivar. That's someone who pieced together words and pictures he published in the past.

Back in the day, I had to send Ivar an apology for one of my countrymen.  Herbert Few had gone off on a bipolar rant asking who is this guy, and what does he know etc.
Ivar is one of the greatest..
