Title: Non MC question: improved gas mileage by 50-60 miles
Post by: dave1068 on August 06, 2021, 03:57:32 PM
Hey all,

I know we have a good variety of engineers, gear heads, etc here. I recently got a new OEM windshield in my Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and do 100miles a day for work. Its all freeway and I avg 70;s ish MPH. I usually go about 320-330 miles on a tank of gas. This week, for whatever reason, Im projecitng about 360-380. The only change is I had a new windshield put in by safelite.

And yes, my driving route and speed have not changed, just curious if anyone knows why i may have been able to go 60more miles on a full tank?

Thanks-

Instead of miles per tank, figure miles per gallon. More accurate

If the shape is the same then it’s unrelated.

Possibilities include:

* Ambient temperature. The hotter, the thinner the air and less resistance which adds at highway speeds

* Fuel formulation - less ethanol or oxygenation = more miles per gallon.

* Differences in traffic conditions - more drafting at steady speeds, less stop and go, more gradual acceleration all = more mpg.

I have an older Jeep, did a lot of four wheeling with it.
One day I noticed the fuel guage wasn't reading normally.
The sender in the tank must have bounced around, I guess.
Never really concerned me, I never let it get low anyway.

Since the windshield is the least aero thing on a car, particularly a Jeep, it could be possible. Just the smooth surface on new glass might make a difference, or perhaps how solid the glass was mounted and the attendant vibration, or leaking weather stripping.

Did the windshield make a difference?   Perhaps.

Do you have a practical joker as a neighbor? Adds a little gas to your Jeep once a week? Co-worker perhaps?

All good answers, it could be the gas as it was 333 a gallon in a hick town, im avg about 30mpg, prior 26-27, so 4 more mpg x 12g tank, almost 50 more mpg....we shall see what next tank leads to
