A friend gave me an original Convert air filter assembly, the one that takes the long cone filter elements and has a co-axial breather box.
What a job to get that sucker installed, I had to take out all the cables and hoses so I could slide it in from the battery box area.
Is there a clamp that fastens the rear rubber cover to the breather box?
I assume its fastened to the top frame tube at the front bolt to lay parallel to the top frame tube, how far away?
Thanks
Roy

You're friend gave you this airbox because of the hassles trying to remount it. When I had a Convert, I suffered the same dilemma.
Toss it, and install some pods.

Usually you destroy it w/o splitting the frame. Buy a breather box & put on oval K&N's or pods, you will be glad you did MANY times over. Original don't mean s**t unless you like to be pissed off!! It's your sanity.

The "clamp" that secures the rubber boot to the metal body is four pieces: two springs and two "C" shaped metal pieces. #4 and #5 in this illustration:

So, for converting over to a POD and discarding the old conical Tonti breather, is this all that is needed? Or does an additional aftermarket airbox need to be fitted for the new filter as well?

You would need to fit a V7 Sport/850-T/850 Le Mans crankcase breather.

Haha, you guys underestimate how stubborn an old Kiwi can be. First of all I tried getting the assembly in in one piece, that didn't work so I pulled it all apart and jammed the shroud in first then I inserted the filter and air box, getting the carbs back on was a bit of a chore and mating all the hoses considerably worse, took me the better part of all day by the time I got the fuel lines made up.
I figure if I get this working I will never change the filter again so I took my time making up all the hoses
The bike had some sort of double pod on it, an oily mess, It turned out there was no breather valve, someone had cut a hole in the breather box and removed it. The whole battery box area was an oily mess.
It appears that any oil mist produced by this breather box is introduced to the carburetor inputs so hopefully this will be self contained, I bought one of the MG Cycle one way valves.
Thanks Charlie for the great pictures I can easily make something similar out of aluminium.
I see Twodogs still has the original filter on his bike.https://ibb.co/F0fvtyG

After installing the same type of air box on my v50, I went with pod air filters and the LeMans breather on the G5. The breather was a little tricky to figure out but the setup looks so much better and makes removing carbs a breeze.

I'm in the same camp as the others, the po went to great lengths to put the stock air box back on and when it comes time for me to ever have to do something in there I will go back to pods :boozing: I'm pretty sure that they came up with the air box and then told them to build a bike around it :bike-037:

You guys are wearing me down,
When I took over the bike a couple of months back it had one of the 5 legged air boxes, a double pod filter and a large plastic line poking out behind the number plate.
A smaller line teed off and stuck into the side of the K&N filter, these are the parts it had.
https://www.mgcycle.com/images/atrex/14155700.jpg https://www.mgcycle.com/images/atrex/mg2640.jpg
The centre of the bike was an oily mess, that had to go.
I think the main reason the box was spewing oil, a PO had burnt a hole through the side of the 5 legged box and removed the one way valve patching the hole in the box with some sort of epoxy.
The oil breathed out of the engine through the breather box out the 5th leg into the filter then finally dripped out and all through the battery compartment, the long hose sticking out behind the number plate must have been to stop that.
---
The original box has a much simpler arrangement with the 5th leg venting directly into each carburetor throat well downstream of the paper filter. It doesn't have a one way valve either so I fitted one of the in-line ball valves from MG Cycle https://www.mgcycle.com/images/atrex/28150560.jpg Perhaps all it needed to make the PO's system work was this simple valve.
Anyway I have this air box in now, I'm not going to pull it out again without at least giving it a go.
Stick around, you can say,"I told you so"
I probably should stick to electrickery

I'm using the original air filter setup on my G5. I don't plan on every changing the air filter again :azn:

I remember about 20 years back I removed the flat bar with the stud on it from my Verts breather box and clamped a great honking K&N filter to the breather, no more pain in the ass stock filter and box to struggle with. DonG
