Title: (NGC) Look what followed me home!
Post by: Motormike on August 10, 2021, 04:57:44 PM
Retiring and realizing you will no longer have a steady paycheck can be a bit of a shock to the system.  So, when I retired about three years ago, for some unknown reason, I felt the urge to raise some cash.  I decided I would sell one of my motorcycles.  A 2003 BMW K1200gt, which I had farkled and trimmed out to perfection for me. Corbin saddle, PIAA lights, bag liners, Laminar Lip, Garmin, really nice.  But when a BMW breaks, they can break big ($$$) so I sold it.  When, a few months later, the world didn't end just because my paychecks did, I really regretted letting it go.  So I've been looking (rather casually) to see if another one ever would pop up near me.  It had to be within 200 miles and have less that 20,000 miles on it.  Finally, after letting a few slip between my fingers, a clean, low milage (10,000) example popped up in Birmingham, AL.  I was able to grab it before anyone else, even though the seller had two other buyers that had cash-in-hand, for once I got there ahead of them.

I'm going to call it "The Blue Whale."

Good looking bike, I always liked the look of that model. I too have been looking for a low mileage RT the ones I’ve Found I’ve waited too long to pull the trigger, something will come along , I’m in no hurry. Good luck and enjoy.

I've always had a soft spot (in my head ) for the "Flying Brick" K bikes.  The last generation of the RS and GT were smooth and powerful.  I had my first GT shipped out to San Jose and proceeded to ride it up and down Highway 1 from Big Sur to the Ave. of the Giants.  To this day it remains perhaps my most enjoyable tour.  I only hope this one is as much fun.

Congrats...Very nice looking Beemer!   :thumb: :boozing:

My buddy had one and they are more like a fast Mako Shark then a Blue Whale.

A true Road Rocket, and a very capable touring bike!

Beautiful!  Love your GT edition of the K1200RS.  Nice find!

I owned a bunch of K bikes ...... 85 K100RS, 88 K75S, 89 K100RS/ABS, 93 K1100RS, 99 K1200RS.  And a 93 K1100LT for a short time ..... figured out quickly I didn't like full faired bikes!  The 1200RS was a whole different animal.  Engine was no longer a structural part of the frame ..... believe it may have been rubber mounted.  Smooooooth!  No slouch when it came to passing slower traffic, either.  Paralever rear/Telelever front.

Yes, the K1200rs and GT engine was rubber mounted in an aluminum spar frame.  Very smooth.  I have often said if the K1200 held another 1/2 gallon of gas and was 50 lbs lighter, it would have been perfect.

I'm going to try to clip a couple of sections out of a 20 year old video of 4 of us riding the two lane county and old state highway roads from my home in Hudson OH to Vintage Days in 2000.  There's good shots of my K1200RS, Tom's SP1000 with sidecar, and Brad's 1976 HD Super Glide, which he still owns to this day.  Stay tuned.

If any of you know a simple way to extract a few 'clips' from a DVD, drop me a line.

Bob

EDIT:  Motormike, I should have made this post separate from your post.  You ok with this staying here, or would you like me to move it?

Whatever is easiest for you.  Like to see the clips.
