The story complete story is fascinating. https://www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/beanie-babies-go-bust/60da5937a43cb415c53a8f89 (https://www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/beanie-babies-go-bust/60da5937a43cb415c53a8f89) Vice TV link. The manufacturer used the internet to create demand and caused the beanie market to crash. As a species we are pretty stupid .

Compared to Crypto Currencies, at least you have a stupid doll, not vaporware.
Last year it was GameStop stock. And they're still a going concern.

If you look at some of the outrageous Beanie sales on eBay you'll see that both the seller and buyer have little to no history meaning it's likely a money laundering scheme.
My mother passed last year and I would up with over 200 'collectible' Beanies. Most 'rare' ones sell for real at $2 - $5. Giving the others away,

During a recent visit home my daughter dug out her tub of beanie babies, about 50 of them. She looked them up and some are still going for stupid money on the innanet. Go figure.

Asking and selling price are two very different things. If you go to advanced search you can look at completed sales to get a better idea of the real value. (Hint: it's not the asking price)

one of my sons, when little, LOVED to play with beenie babies. He insisted we cut the little tag off each one, maybe 30 or so of them, so we did. As play toys they were really varied and lended to pretend situations. My son now nearly 30 years old for some reason has by now lost interest so the collection sleeps in the attic in a rubbermaid container .

Yes, mine is "special"!!

Reminds me of the Tulip Mania in Eurpoe during the early 1600's. Supply and Demand, with creative marketing and Lemmings for customers.
This type of Ponzi scheme pops up from time to time and seems to ends the same way every time.

Yeah, she's 31 and knows that. She was looking at what they sold for.

I am sure that there is at least one rock in the Waimak River bed that thinks it's special too....
