Interesting that the book says 4 & 6.
Looking at my notes I think the sticker or book on my MkI probably says 6 & 8, but Pete always advised using 4 & 6 so I do.
My notes also suggest the sticker on my III says 6 & 8, but again Pete says to ignore that and use 4 & 6.
Now maybe these are like some of the Calis which had different specs for US models vs EU and that's where it comes from. And why Pete down unda says to ignore US specs and go with EU.
Makes sense to me.
I'm still curious what the sticker says on the new 850 (in the US).
Probably much Ado about nothing either way.

From the sticker on the rear fender under the seat: .0039 inch (.10 mm) / .0059 inch (.15 mm)

Checked and adjusted valves today at 8,500km. Just because I can. And I used a totally unnecessary tool but it does make things slightly easier. All valves were tight. Intakes at less than 0.1mm, maybe 0.095 and exhaust less than 0.15mm, maybe 0.145. All now in specification.

Ohhh - nice tool
What's its proper name and where did you get it from.
I've a birthday coming up and everyone wants to know what I want and that's always difficult at my age

My V7ii Stornello is supposed to be 6 & 8 (.15 & .20mm), but I run 4 & 6 (.10 & 15). Perhaps psyco somatic, but the motor seems to run better with the slightly tighter tolerance, and as Kev said, Roper & Beetle recommend 4 & 6 especially with a Beetle Map.
