We rode old 66 about 15 years ago between Flagstaff and Kingman. From Ash Fork west its pretty much the old pavement that looks like the section in Oklahoma above. What’s missing other than Seligman is the unique places and people that made 66 unique. I drove it a number of times in the 60s while on leave from the Navy. It was still mostly two lane until you got to Illinois. Memorable for sure.

Here's a few from historic Williams, AZ, "The Gateway to the Grand Canyon"

I spent my 67th birthday up there August 8th.  We stayed at the Red Garter Inn, (now restored), which was a famous bordello up until the 1940's.  There are only 5 rooms upstairs! :thumb: :boozing:

Did you visit the house he was raised in to stand on the hallowed ground where his dad and uncle pitched to him ? Man , that's like a spiritual experience .

 TS

No.  I didn't know about that.  I like Mantle-there's something about a guy who could play better when he was drunk than most other players could when sober.  Besides, I was headed up the road to scenic Picher.

Some years ago I was doing guided Route-66 tours for EagleRider.  On one tour we had several German clients.  One of these (Herman the German) couldn't speak a word of English.  But, as we discovered at an evening bar, he was a fantastic guitarist and vocalist.  The house band was on break and he asked if he could use their guitar.  Great performance.   He knew all sorts of 'American' songs but not with understanding.   When we got to Winslow, AZ he enjoyed the song playing on the local speakers and was singing along with it.  Of course,  he had no idea what the words meant and he had no idea that this was THE CORNER referenced in the song.  We worked with several other Germans to translate and explain the significance to him.  You could literally see the light bulb go off in his head.  What a trip!

If you are asking about the house , fairly sure the site is still open although the museum in the little house is probably closed at the moment . Maybe next Spring ? It is just a simple facility on a side street in Commerce .

I'd like to see it.  Never new about it.

That's the stuff I like.  The old original, narrow Rt. 66 pavement.

That's what happened to Paul McCartney.   He got off on a section of "old" 66 and thought he was lost andwas given directions.  He was staying in cheap motels and decided to get the most expensive one on when he got to Okla City and thereafter.

The Show-Me state has quite a bit that's drivable. It went through Springfield's town square. To the west it's 266 now. Runs a mile or two N of I-44

Old Route 66 is 300 feet out my back door.  In years past, we've seen a lot of rental motorcycle groups on the Route 66 trek, and rescued more than a few.

Here we are - somewhere in New Mexico

I have *lots*  Back in the day, Dorcia and I took the Jack-All rig from Chicago to the Santa Monica pier. I had spent much of the Winter researching the old alignments, and tried to hit them all. We didn't get it done, of course, but I think we hit most of it. Dorcia says it was our best vacation ever, but she's into art deco and automobilia.
Here's some of the original..
The story is, they didn't have enough money to go between two towns with 2 lanes, so they just did one lane.
When the big roads were built, many small towns died. There was a lot of this..

This place below is actually in Holbrook, AZ.

The famous La Posada is in Winslow.  Restored now to the tune of over $12M.

Lovely place...and we have stayed there several times.  The restaurant there, called The Turquoise Room is fabulous!  We may go there for Thanksgiving dinner! :thumb: :boozing:    :thumb:

JJ-  I went to Taos late July.  My only "vacation".  I was surprised that so many places were closed there from -.  I was able to get a Navaho rug there (from Afghanistan, best to them over there).  Red River was packed, even to get lunch.  Still, We got a Mexican meal at Guadalajara and a Blake's green chili Lottaburger in Las Vegas, took the scenic way to Tucumcari.  Then back to OKC.

I'll check out that motel sometime I hope if ever in 4 corners.  But you can't go wrong with both places mentioned for a bite to eat.  Skip Red River for a bite.

New Mexico is indeed..."The Land of Enchantment"

Not much has changed in Santa Fe / Taos since our last visit pre--.  Masks were required everywhere "indoors."

Lots of motorcycles in / around Red River.  Beautiful area!  A few photos from our adventure.  Would like to visit again someday, but this time, NOT over Labor Day - TOO HOT...TOO MANY tourists!  Maybe late April or mid Oct.

Here's Mr. Delgaddillo of the Snow Cap back in the day. He passed on to his reward (probably ice cream) a couple of years later.

As you might expect, he was always screwing with the customers. The kid in front of us wanted an ice cream cone, so he gave him one. No ice cream in it..

We've been to 3/4 of those places traveling in a rusted out dodge caravan that we used for a camper. Worked great for camping in COE, national forest, blm and a few rest stops and parking lots when camping plans failed, for 40K miles. Setup was gathering wood and getting out the stoves and chairs, so morning cleanup was quick and easy.

edit: Oh, and a few miles west of cadilac ranch we had a tire blow out on 66. The spare was securely rusted in place. Some guy pulled up and helped me hammer and pry until it came loose about an hour later. Lots of good people out there.

My brother in Law's band used to play in this bar. I guess it's still closed down.

I've stayed at both the El Rancho in Gallup and the Wig-Wam in Holbrook.  What they don't tell you is both back up to a very busy train yard.  Lot's of noise all night long.  Unless you are a very heavy sleeper, take a few pictures and find somewhere else to spend the night.

Murals from East 11th Street Tulsa, OK original route of US-66. The gentleman pictured in the third pic is Curtis Avery, considered by many to be the 'father' of Route 66.

Both of those towns are on the BNSF (Santa Fe) Southern TransCon.  Busiest in the country.  Several trains per hour, 24/7.  Double Stack container trains running both ways.  As a railfan, I love that.  But, i can see where an unsuspecting person would not.  LOL!

PJPR1...I was drinking Bock long before it ever showed up on the national scene.  For no particular reason I fly down to SA about every 4-5 years, get a rental and drive the 110 odd miles out to Shiner and the brewery for a solo visit. Almost always around 6 Mar so I can attend the sunrise ceremony in remembrance of the Fall of the Alamo.

Much of Easy Rider was filmed along Rt. 66.  And much of it around Flagstaff, Az.  The cast and crew stayed at Little American while filming.  Attached are pics from the movie and how the locations look today.  The first is the Pine Breeze motel where Capt America and Billy are turned away.  The No Vacancy sign sits in the restaurant/bar at the Harley dealer near by.  The 2nd is the Sacred Mtn Trading Post where they stop to gas up.
