Sad news indeed...I wonder if the Tour will still go on. Seems less likely now...
-
The Stones had already subbed in another drummer, as Watts was recovering from a medical procedure.

He was the "Healthy " one of the Stones! Sad to see so many talented people passing!

Yes, a few weeks ago, but at that point I don't know if they had anticipated Charlie was so close to the end...maybe so.

:thumb: SoCV. A strong case could be made that Charlie was the coolest dude in the band. I read Keith's book. Highly recommend.
I am still trying to deal with Tom Petty being gone. Tis the season of our lives. Discussed with many of my pals and we all feel the same that we are very fortunate to walk (& ride) on this planet when we did.

great drummer, great band, great era.

Wellll....
Just being in the ‘Stones is fantastic enough, but there really are thousands of great drummers, they’re just not in great bands...
Sorry for his family that he’s dead though, he seemed pretty harmless.

I like the story that he flattened Mick after waking Charlie up the middle of the night,
"Where's my f***-ing drummer?"
WHACKK!!!!!
"You're my f***-ing singer. Goodnight."
-
So name me one other drummer who anchored the same basic unit for almost 60 years , stayed mostly out of the spotlight , and was also known to be a very decent bloke . Ya can't can ya .

Perhaps we might recall some of the show we've been to?
Dallas, St Louis, OKC. The later (last show) in an (smaller) indoor arena, two stages separated by a catwalk. They did "Kicks on Rt 66"...."Oklahoma City looked so damn pretty" .... They also did "Moon Light Mile". 🆒
The St Louis show was at Busch Stadium (RIP), the band came in with a recording of Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and ended with a recording of Hendrix "....Banner" with fireworks.
The first show was in the Cotton Bowl. We were on the field, saw a naked man on acid dancing wildly. ZZ Top opened. A couple of hours later the Stone show up, Jagger is dressed in Tony Dorsett's uniform. Jagger sang from a cherry picker.
They were all unforgettable shows. In OKC I remember Jagger looking at me when he turned stage right where I was sitting. I was in his sight line. I believe he looked me in the eyes several times. When they went to second stage, Charlie's trap set elevated to the stage. Yeah, my favorite show. But man, get offa my cloud.

Sad to hear, but 80 is a pretty long life, especially for a rock musician. He gave it his all and deserves respect.
But as for comparisons, Neil Peart of Rush stayed out of the "limelight" and was not only one of the greatest percussion talents in history, but a decent man, and a fabulous, intellectual song-writer. We lost Neil far too soon. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have said Rush is over - they will not play as Rush without Neil.
I will play the full Tattoo You album now in observance of Charlie's death.

From John Hiatt's "Slow Turning" "Now I'm in my car
I got the radio on
I'm yellin' at the kids in the back seat
'Cause they're bangin' like Charlie Watts"

One of my favorite Stones toons, and showcases how tight a band they are.
Charlie Watts drumming is rocking throughout.

It's been said, that unlike most bands, Watts did not set the beat, he followed Richard's lead...He did the job, never too much or too little....
I'm a fan of early Stones music...I'm a King Bee, Carol and the like. First saw the Stones in 1965 in a thousand seat auditorium in Newark NJ. Got tickets ant the door...

agree that Charlie and Keith were on it.
Also, Charlie played in traditional style, not in matched grip like most rock drummers. Although, I think I've seen some older videos where he might've played otherwise. Most shots, he's playing traditionally, I think that was his jazz influence.
