So, the other day, I pull up to a stop sign and my Convert sputters and dies. Hate it when that happens, and it doesn’t take long to figure out that it was out of gas. The low fuel indicator light hasn’t worked for some time, so I decided to check that out.
Information on the problem is likely out there, but I couldn’t find anything. Basically, the low fuel switch on the Convert etc. (PN# 18 10 30 50) supplies a ground to the indicator light when the level of gas in the tank gets low. With the ignition on, I grounded one of the terminals on the switch and the indicator light lit, so the bulb was ok. I checked my switch, and it wouldn’t connect to ground, confirming the problem.
I cut the plastic tube to see what’s inside of the switch (DON”T DO THIS*) The guts of the thing are two brass (I think) rods and a float with a copper disc on the bottom. When the float gets to a certain point, the the two rods are connected by the disc, and the circuit is complete. On my switch, the rods and disc were both so corroded or fouled that they wouldn’t allow the current to flow.
*You can pop the float out by using a small allen wrench in the hole in the plastic tube. Clean the tops of the rods and the disc. Push the float back in and you’re good to go. The plastic seal (PN# 90 71 42 85) is NLA, but mine cleaned up ok and it should work with some gasket sealant. I'll use some JB Weld to re-connect the tube I cut.

I haven't seen that particular switch, thanks for posting the picture.
I assume the switch is screwed into the bottom of the tank.

Yes, towards the front, RH side.

I gave up on mine ever working correctly, disconnected it, and installed two petcocks with a reserve function.

If ever there was an application for a reed switch this is it, a 2 Amp switch soldered between the two brass rods and a magnet attached to the float would eliminate the contact.
