Title: Found a bike hoarder out in the farmlands. :O
Post by: Caffeineo on October 05, 2021, 01:24:34 PM
I was riding out in the farmlands and came across a mailbox that used a Hodaka gas tank, fork and bars to hold it. Thought I would get a pic to send my brother as we both had Hodaka Ace 100's as kids. Dog is barking and a guy comes out. I tell him my story and he says..... "I got some more if you want to see them" Well heck yea. He told me to ride out back and he would meet me there. Needless to say I could not believe how many bikes he has. Really a great guy and made my ride and day one of the best ever.

Is he married?  LOL!

I know a guy who one had 70 motorcycles in his barn.  He would basically buy a lot of bikes from a motorcycle shop owner friend of his that were bikes that were repaired but the owner never claimed them.  The shop owner would take legal possession for non payment and this guy would buy for the repair cost.

He only had a handful back on the road though.

He was divorced.

That's pretty much what I imagine the garages of all the WG posters except for mine looks like.

Collectors are great people.  A local guy I met has about 150 cars, trucks, tractors, bull dozers, dump trucks, loaders, excavators, road tractors, etc.

Nicest guy in the world.  Enough projects to keep him busy well into his early 400's.

He probably knows Steve out of NH.  Big time Hodaka collector.  He has some for sale that are in very good condition.

He is divorced so the Indian is where he likes it. Told me he does not smoke, drink or do drugs so he just spent his money on motorcycles. Now I am wanting to keep riding out in the farmlands. LOL.

I came back from NJ with my buddy and he bought two -68/9 Bultaco Matadors, -73 Alpina, Yamaha DT from a "hippie" who must have had over 100 bikes in barn. Anything from Guzzi Stornello to Ossa. He also told that he bought a 3000sft house to store the "better ones" and after few visits more, he confessed that he has a barn in Virginia filled with stuff.
Being a "hippie" (he had super interesting stories from 60's...), he is not interested of selling anything, but dreams about moving to CA (one of these days...)

We'll be going back with sixpack to talk and see what would be available.... if anything.

Just shows that there are collections of bikes out there waiting to be discovered. Sure is fun when you come across one.

I dont understand the point of saving all this dusty broken stuff in a state of disrepair?
Whats the point of having 100 bikes if none of them run? Do these guys believe 'one day' they are going to drag these out one by one and restore them?
I guess this is the reason I find shows like American Pickers so annoying. All these people seem to think they are sitting on a pile of <Rusty Gold> but is it really anything besides a bunch of old junk?

Collecting/displaying/maintaining/restoring a load of bikes is one thing...
Stockpiling a bunch of vintage pieces so that you can break them up and sell parts to keep other machines running is another...

But just piling scores of bikes and thousands of parts in a dirty old barn to deteriorate (and then saddle your heirs with heaps of stuff that they most likely will end up scrapping for less than pennies per pound) just doesn't compute for me.

  Hoarders have no logic.....

Lotso 70's bikes. There's treasure there. I see not one but two Triumph TR5T's. I had a Yamaha DT400 just like that one...

The blue tank bike is a Triumph TR5MX single which looks similar.

A 1974 TR5T Trophy Trail (2213 miles) I sold a year or so back (keeping one other)

Thanks for sharing that. I had a yellow TR5T and have seen a red one. I just assumed (you know what that gets you) that the blue tank was a TR5T also. Didn't know that there was an MX model.

He is a really nice, knowledgeable guy and he told me that "someday" he will build a shop so that "someday" he can start restoring them. And of course nothing is for sale.

The TR5MX was basically a BSA B50MX 500 single with a 21 inch front wheel, most if not all (600 units or so) went to the USA so the bike in that pic is fairly rare.

Holy Vintage motocross, Batman! Who woulda thought all those ill-handling 70's motocrossers would be worth several times their original value today? Worth something now when they aren't TOO decrepit, as long as he keeps a good roof over them they'll be OK for the day they are properly rescued. Good for him, I wish I had a similar hoard, but I couldn't stand to see them just fester away.

"As for me, I spent most of my money on motorcycles.  The rest I just wasted."  Old biker saying.
