I got a 7/33 rear drive unit last spring with the idea of putting in my 08 Calvin to pep it up a bit..
Well the spline depth is not the same so it was a no go.
Will it work in my 02 Stone????
I thought I would ask first before I start taking things apart.
Thanks in advance for the information.

What part won't work? Are you swapping the whole drive unit, or the gears? Gears should swap ok.
If it won't fit your Vintage, it won't fit an 02 Cali

There's an inner spacer/sleeve that needs to swap out. It might seem like it can't be removed but it can, kind of a pressed in fit. So take the spacer from the 8x33 and use it in the new drive housing.
It's about 2-3" long and the axle runs through it.

Mr. Revhead, I'm swapping the whole unit, it was last spring and problem is a little fuzzy now. The unit either slid in to far or not far enough.
Fotoguzzi may have the answer. I will try it again the winter.
Thanks for your replys.

The only difference, I believe, would be the axle spacer, which can be swapped out. The front spline depth has not changed in like forever.

The female splined hub in the rear drive changed around 2001, from part no. 12351400/17351400 (which had been used since 1967), to 03351450 which had deeper splines.
So, to answer e.cleven's question, no - it likely won't work on the '02 Stone either.

Charlie, thanks for the info. When I had the two drive unit side by side the 08 splines were an 1/8 to 3/16 inch different, the 08 being the deeper of the two.
Any way, being the hard head I am I will still try it on the 02 Stone this winter and if it doesn't work I'll say ,dang Charlie was right.. I will even post it.
Thanks.

The female splines on the input to the drive stick up proud of the housing more so than on the older 7:33 drives. This is because in order to install the cheaper spoked rim, Guzzi had to change 4 or 5 other parts. They were to shift the wheel to the left in order to center the skinnier rim. You might just find an EV wheel that will fit right to your 7:33 with the other spacers etc.

Forget about it and sell the rear drive, the Calvin is plenty peppy for old farts like us.

Mr. Revhead, I'm swapping the whole unit, it was last spring and problem is a little fuzzy now. Judging from your post and your dual addresses I’d say that qualifies as a senior moment. I have the quie regularly nowadays.
