Title: Sorta Guzzi Content? Cheap Shipping
Post by: jrt on October 11, 2021, 08:11:39 PM
My wife has a hobby of making pottery- she is getting pretty good at it.  Sometimes, she would like to send some pieces to her friends, so she packs it up and trundles down to the post office.  This last box was quoted as $63 to send it to San Diego!  Ouch!
What is the secret to less expensive shipping?  Imagine a pair of Gilardoni cylinders or a pair of heads or maybe a wheel to ship- stuff about that size and weight.  Thanks!

Shipping USPS with fragile items is always gonna cost more, as will using the "if it fits it ships" priority boxes, but if you request something "media mail" and use your own boxes you can cut the cost some. FED-UPS gives volume shippers the most discounts, but if you go through their registration process you can still get a better than street rate.

Not sure on your requiements but I've used Greyhound Package Express for smaller heavy stuff.  You need a bus terminal though.

Fastenal...  Numerous old car friends use it for shipping heavy stuff like engines, blocks, heads & transmissions.  Very happy. They don't offer service between far western USA and the central-east coast.  We know that.

So I'm in SC. Local Fastenal here in town. Sold a Bridgeport J milling machine head this summer to buyer in West Baton Rouge, LA who had a local Fastenal - actually more than one within the overall area where he worked. Very cool.

Fastenal stores or employees don't do any of the process.  They're only pick-up & drop-off points for Blue Lane.  There's no longer an option to call blue lane directly for a quote.  It's a 100% online process.  After a prolonged 2+wk wait with no response to required form/email shipping quote process, I finally got a live person on regular Fastenal phone and learned Fastenal/Blue Lane is not consistent in coverage area or availability.  They don't ship to THAT Fastenal in WBR. The nearest storefront served was 160 miles away from the buyer.....  Not cool.  Apparently the Blue Lane online process does not automatically flag requests related to such dead zones and no reply is generated or provided to inform the customer it's an invalid request.  We ended up shipping via UPS for much more $$$

don't assume Fastenal is a viable option before the transaction.

I bought a coupleof two man Mercury chainsaws at auction for a couple of guys in Wiscoinsin. After fiddling around with UPS, FedX and Fastenal and coming up with extremely high rates or no service, Fastenal, for almost a year with no results. I finally got connected ABF Freight. You have to complete a bill of lading on line. I crated them and took them to the terminal where they took them and sent them off. They were shipped to a business on the other end which is critical to keep the cost down. The cost came out to be much less than half of the rates given me by FedX or UPS. I am sure other freight companies would be similar if you take it to a terminal and ship it to a business. At least that is what I did.
