The Texas Monthly top 50 barbecue joints list is out, along with another 50 honorable mentions.
Tastes vary. Arguments ensue. There are places I think should be on the list that aren't.

Having lived here for a year now
1. Texas is real proud of the BBQ. $30/lb for brisket seems to be an average rate. Pulled pork is usually over $20/lb.
2. Most of the places overdo their slaw.
3. What passes for pecan pie would not survive one of my South Carolina family reunions.
My favorites around Austin, so far:
1. Valentina's- If you are going by just the meats they really nail that.
2. Terry Black's- It's the best experience everything considered. This is where I take visitors.
3. Riverside in Wimberly- It's a nice ride over there, its not crowded, and there is usually a guy playing guitar outside. And the pork belly is good.
4. Loro on South Lamar- Mainly because it's different with an Asian twist.
5. Rudy's- the bbq prime rib is good stuff.
6. H.E.B. True Kitchen- If you are just doing takeout you can save some bucks. The one I-35 and Slaughter is as good as most and a whole lot cheaper.
That's it so far. More research is being performed however :)

Few years ago I stopped at Bodacious BBQ on I-20 around Tyler TX and there was a black V7II Guzzi in the parking lot . I had some of the best BBQ I ever had and talked to the Guzzi owner and he told me and about Wildgoose Chase Moto Guzzi I wish I could remember his name he was from Texas . Dilliw is right about HEB BBQ on I-35 & Slaughter and it 5 min. from home Salt Lick is great too .

I've sampled BBQ everywhere. I'll give the BEEF BBQ in south central Texas as outstanding, especially the "dinosaur" Short Rids, Brisket and Clod. The pork is pretty good with the slow smoked prep but has the same salt & pepper seasoning that's on the beef- not BBQ seasoning as expected in Memphis or KC (or Okla).
I was just in Dallas, looking for some short ribs- couldn't find them. I lived in Texas for 5 years and wasn't impressed with BBQ, mostly an imitation of of KC (Okla)- perhaps that's East TX BBQ?. But I never went to Lockhart or Llano back then and tried the beef or their version of pork, all outstanding.
Anyway, I'd like some recommendations for DFW, San Ant, Houston, etc. But no one can can go wrong in Lockhart, just don't expect KC BBQ sauce.

reading the article, I wish I'd known about Cattleack BBQ in Dallas last week. Only open a few hours a day, I'd like to have brought home some dinner.
In that part of town, I can always recommend Lowry's Prime Rib for a ni$e evening feast.

There will never be an agreement on the best bbq in Texas. Always subjective.
I've had some pretty good q that I bought along side the road made out of an old 55 gallon drum. No, I didn't want to know what used to be in the drum.
Absolute worse was from a roadside stand in Vermont, NH or one of them foreign countries up north. I parked the Guzzi and ordered a bbq sandwich. She brought it out and I peeled back the bun to put some hot sauce on it. GET A ROPE. It was ground meat with onion, carrot and celery. Yes, sir that is bbq when I asked if this was a mistake. Man, you'd be graveyard dead if you tried to pass to pass that crap off as bbq in Texas.'
Buy a Moberg smoker. Starting at $12K with a year and a half wait.

Oh, please. Amateurs. A typical Texican example of "big hat; no cattle."

Well done, George. Keep up your daunting research. :thumb:
It's not that the Texas stuff is bad; it's just not world class. Put parboiled meat from scrawny senior-citizen animals over a fire, slather it with sugar water of different colors, and you get predictable results. No, true carnivores wouldn't spit it out, but neither do we rave about it.

Must go. Gave of our N.C. daughter our little pickup (230K+ miles) and thus lost a tow vehicle for my m/c trailer. Just put a hitch on our '09 Fit with 260K+ miles and want to see whether the car or trailer is in charge.

Ha!
Actually, upon reflection, I do recall you taking me to a way-more-than-adequate BBQ place down your way.
I also remember that this was right before I blew up your LeMans's engine.

Cooper's BBQ of Llano has a location in Junction TX right on I-10 that is nicer and less crowded than the original. Huge oak tree out back with shaded picnic tables beneath it. Ate there last summer and was really happy with it.

When my coworkers go to El Paso they stay at the hotel next to Rudy’s. They eat Rudy’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I get them to bring me a Togo order since I stay closer to the work site.

Rudy's is a good TX BBQ chain. It's a derivative of TX style BBQ joints.
Cooper's is an original. They know how to make Dino TX Beef Ribs. You won't find that at Rudy's. But Rudy's is pretty good, not Billy Sims' good but pretty good. Billy doesn't have beef ribs either.

Billy Sims must vary. Had it first in OK and it was so so. One opened in a town near us and is much better. For great central KS BBQ, Pig in Pig out in Wichita is one of the best IMHO. Another great one is just off I-135 in Salina called the Hickory Hut.

Billy's spare ribs are as good as any. At least 9 out of 10. BBQ is NEVER 100%.
