Hi,
It's been a while but good to be back. I just got my new V7 850. Very happy but curious about the sudden change from 75W.90 to 75W-140 oil both trans and gearbox. Why curious? Because the bike is really stiff changing from 2nd to 3rd. To the point it's quite aggravating, Admittedly, very few miles yet, but I've had new V7s before (both II and III) and never felt such stiffness. I know the bike is under warranty but knowing my dealer it'll likely be a case of a quick (and not too gentle) spin and "they all do that sir/give it some miles/can't feel a thing). I'd rather try to understand what the higher viscosity does for (or to) a trans. To my knowledge the trans is unchanged from the III. If so then I'm tempted to try 75W-90 instead and see if it helps.
Any thoughts?

Re read the book. Gear box is rear end. I bet trans is still90#

Sorry, forgot the Guzzi terminology. Corrected my first post. However, my question still stands:

I suspect clutch adjustment would help. No stiffness in my '21 V7 E5 gearbox. Not even when brand new. Good luck!
To answer your original question, I think that the new oil may suit both the gearbox and the bevel box well. Also, the E5 gearbox may not be identical to that of the V7III. I know that the gear ratios for 1st and 6th gears are different on the V7II and V7 E5 gearboxes. I recall reading some Guzzi fluff about the 850cc models that the gearbox and the bevel box are were changed to be able to handle the greater torque coming from the bigger engine.

Thanks sib. All good advice but the clutch is properly adjusted, oil level and viscosity are correct and I shift as I always have. And the issue is only from 2nd to 3rd, not any other shift (including from 3rd to 2nd). However, a beefed up tranny may be part of the explanation and for the rest, well, in my experience they're all individuals and I'll give it some time.
Having said that, I'm still curious about different tranny oil viscosities, if any of you guys have any experience.

V7III has a six speed with an oil pump and holds 500cc as I recall.
The V85 holds 700 cc and has no punp. I would assume that is the 6 spd in the V7-850.

Took me a couple of journeys to really calibrate myself to the Centenario. Lightest clutch I've ever used and the box is also smooooth. I did adjust the shift lever up by one spline.

My bike shifts smooth too OlofE, and has from the beginning. But I would swear it shifted smoothest BEFORE the first service, when according to my paperwork they drained the gearbox and filled it with Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75W140. It did cause me to wonder about the factory fill.

I find mine getting smoother as miles accumulate, only 2,500 so far . Neutral is also getting easier to find when hot , no lssues cold . Ask me again @ 5k +

According to the manuals, the V7 E5 bikes have a gearbox oil pump and hold 500cc.

75W-90 or 75W-140 should act/feel the same when cold or under normal operating conditions. Its doubtful the transmission gets anywhere hot enough to warrant the need for the thermal protection 140 oil offers.
Well, the bevel box oil has used W**-140 oils for many years, and it probably doesn't get any hotter than the gearboxes.
