Imagine a guy buys a new Norge for $20,000 and he gets 500 km to a tank of fuel...
Tyres.
$500 a set that last 20,000 km is $12 on top of every full tank.
Depreciation.
If I tried to sell my Norge at 200,000 km, I would get nothing for it. So it’s cost me $20,000 to burn 400 tanks of fuel so that’s $50 per tank.
Registration
I’ve had it since ‘07 so that’s 15 years, @ 500 per year that’s $7,500 in rego. If I’ve burned 400 tanks of fuel in that time, that equals $190 per tank.
Then there’s servicing costs etc...Remember, these costs are based on ADDITIONAL expenditure PER TANK.
(We haven’t put the fuel in yet....)
Of course you don’t think of all this at these times.

Cost of everything is very important. My attorney tells me how much it is going to cost me before I marry my next ex wife.

What is the cost per year for mental health treatment if you don’t ride.No motorcycles in the shrink patient lot.

This thread just got uncomfortable :embarrassed:
Nah..
Close your eyes and you wouldn’t know the difference.

Yeah I gave up a long time ago trying to justify motorcycle ownership.
I don’t drink, do drugs or chase women so.....I can ride-on!
Well a glass of wine every once in awhile and chasing my wife of course!

Tex, there’s an easier way to do that marriage/divorce thing. Just find a woman you really really hate, and give her your house.
(Old Lewis Grizzard joke. And he had personal experience)

Don't forget to add the costs of the other bike/ bikes you can't ride while you're out on the Norge
-
500 registration. No wonder your roads are in such good shape.

In all seriousness, I figure I’m at about 15 cents per mile all in, and that includes fully depreciating the cost of the bike. So getting reimbursed at the federal mileage rate of 56 cents means I’m turning a profit.
Yes, the gas mileage on a bike is decent, but cars have caught up a lot compared to the 1970s.
Motorcycle tires are a serious drain compared to a car, and most new people don’t realize that. You really don’t want to run crap tires on a bike, and they don’t last long compared to car tires.
To me, the big savings on a bike are depreciation and cost of maintenance. I paid about $7500 for the Guzzi, and can reasonably expect to get 250,000 miles from it. That’s a measly 3 cents a mile.
I can and will do most of my own maintenance on the Guzzi. My last clutch job was about $200 in parts. I would not do clutch or transmission work on a “nice” sporty fun to drive car, and bet it would be very expensive. My coworkers seem to think it’s normal to spend $1500 to $2000 for dealer repair work on their nice new cars.

Just be glad it's not an airplane or a boat!

I don't try to justify cost of ownership. 50 years ago I accepted that the rides have more than compensated for cost .
