The 17’ Roamer 853cc i flog about on is far from a Fast motorcycle, but I find it fast enough, most times.
With a OEM Guzzi touring wind shield it shows a 110-12 mph on the clock wound up in 6th. That’s probably 103-5 mph in reality.
Curious as to top end on other small block models?
-
My V85 is looking for a nap at around 175 -180. The rpm lights are starting the flash a bit around there.
-
Don’t know but 25 over will get your WI license suspended.
-
Tom, please don't start this crap.
I don't care, what will get who when where. I have done it more times than I can remember, will I get caught the next time, maybe, that's not the point! Do it on a closed circuit, I don't care!
Huzo, that's not very impressive from a machine that should have over 20hp on the Roamer!
-
2017 V7 III Special, no windshield, 30L hard bags, about 105 MPH indicated, so, probably about 100 MPH assuming 5% optimistic speedometer.
My previous 2013 V7 Racer and 2014 V7 had similar top speeds.
-
The AeroLario will go 85. :azn: It sez so right on the speedometer.
-
That’s a Bummer. Apparently the government limited the speed the bike could go. If only the speedometer had a higher end. But anyway, 85 is to dam fast!! :thewife: :thewife:
-
Hey Chad, how bout the V65SP? I set up a friends wifes bike w/foam filters & Bubs and it inicated 125mph
I think Ed has gone faster w/his smallblocks racing than anyone else has!

I never said it was impressive Chad.
Who knows, if I just pinned it and waited, it might go faster.
I just knock off when the lights start to flash, but I’ll bet my arse it’ll get there quicker than the V9.
Having said that, if I could have bought a V85 with a roamer engine for correspondingly less, I’d probably have done so.
By all accounts it is a nicer “Guzzi like” mill....

When the V40 gets on the road I'm optimistically hoping to see 130  ,well maybe with a tailwind off a cliff

My Maseratti does one-eighty-five
I lost my license, now I don't drive.....

I used to race small kneel down outboard race boats. One guy posted that he hit 70 mph in testing with his C Stock Runabout. Normal speed for that class is in the middle 60's for the most part. Second guy added that his did 70 all the time on the trailer behind his truck.

2013 V7 Stone can do a genuine 103 mph per GPS (the speedometer is way off). I wanted to know, yes or no, could it break the Ton. That was on flat Texas ground, with 30 liter Hepco saddlebags, and a big fat guy riding it while wearing Aerostich gear. I thought about doing an underwear only run, but decided that would make a bad booking photo.
There was just a touch of wind. I bet you could probably get 105 or maybe 106 mph in a dead calm desert road condition.
The small block is twitchy and quite unhappy there. I routinely run 85 to 90 on the Stone for hours, and it’s ok with that. There is a tollway road east of Austin that has a posted limit of 85 mph, and left lane traffic is flowing 90+.
But there is a big difference between 90 and 100 in terms of raw horsepower necessary. Given inclines and wind, running 85 to 90 means you are almost always WOT.
I have yet to determine the top end of my 1996 Ducati 900SS. I know it will do 110 per GPS. The big difference in the Ducati is that it *likes* running that fast. Does not seem nervous or strained. I’d guess 125 to 130 is the top for the Duck.
-
2014V7R at approx 6194 feet altitude. No headwind and a very slight downhill incline. Me laying on tank bag resulted in 97-98 mph. My body type is extra husky so that and the altitude probably figured into the sub ton result.
-
Bring it on Huzo! I get the flashing red light too, but I keep on pushing!
I set the shift light to kick on 500rpm prior to computer intervention, and if I’m paying attention I can shift before retardation sets in!

The official way to get your top speed is, as you said underwear only, but you have to be horizontal, stomach on the seat, feet waving in the breeze behind you. Just ask Rollie Free...

Good guess...my '97 900ss would do about 125 up the Andretti straight at Mosport. My buddy clocked me with a radar gun as I came over the crest into turn 8. Might have squeezed a bit more but I saw Jesus... that was a fun bike at the track, especially a technical one like Grattan.

From Tkelly:
The850 t went 123 .what does yours do Again?
I have a T-3 that is somewhat modified and dynos 56+ off the rear wheel. Have had it up to 115mph indicated with me, the wife and a trunk onboard. That was done in a very rural, flat (you can see for miles and miles...) blacktop in western KS.

The Lario, probabley, the Monza, no way. I have Faloon's book too, and see where he quotes Motociclisom, Sept 81 of a Monza with a 107 top speed, and I don't believe it.
I had a v65sp, which had more guts than any Monza, and my v9 would eat the v65 for lunch and still be hungry.
Faloon
The 850T is a big block, so that's not what we are talking about here.

Agreed, the small blocks are not well suited for much more than 75, and cruise most comfortably at 60-70 MPH.
I agree, the top end for your 900SS is likely 125 to 130. That's about what my Monster 796 tops out at. It probably makes similar power, though the aerodynamics of your 900SS are probably a little better.
-
The v50ii must be one of the slowest of the small blocks, but it sounds aggressive and delicious on the pipe. It is also surprisingly steady and smooth at 50-70 on the highway. I will never test it’s top end as I just don’t ride that fast anymore. I like it over the big block in the sense that I can ride it at 6-7k in town and still maintain safe speeds.
-
130 kph?
Definitely not MPH ! The factory manual suggests " over 150 kmh" . I doubt that !
I recall the Lario getting over the ton ( 170?), but that was a long time ago and the older I get the faster it was.
-
V7 III Stone, E4 vs E5 top speed?
Though more important to me is acceleration at highway speeds for two lane passing.
-
My V7lll Special is faster than I expected but if I want to go really fast I drag out the Audace. I have no idea how fast it will go but I have seen 96 in 4th.

On my v85, I have seen 110mph before I backed off, probably less in reality. It is still stable at that speed. I have always felt that that engine in a lower chassis with some bodywork and proper gearing would be good for 125-130 mph. But, what use would it really be in the States?
I had a K1200RS Beemer that would indicate 150mph, but again, the top speed really didn't matter in the US, but the torque was a real rush flying up to any legal speed and for passing.
-
The v9 is twitchy over 95. It’s not scary, but it’s clearly not super planted post ton.
It’s kind of a dumb question, but one worth asking. The v9 is very happy to bound around from 0-95 mph, pretty much what it was intended for.

My land speed racer 650 Triumph has 57 hp @ 7100 rpm at the rear wheel . It also has 39 ft lbs of torque at 7100 rpm... It has run 133 mph into a slight head wind , clocked by electronic Equipment...and held several speed records..
Notice how low the clipons are, the general lack of crap in the in the wind.

I know cold weather is coming, and everyone likes to talk how fast they can go, but....
It's also rut time for deer. Bucks are chasing doe's, doe's are running from bucks.
All times of the day, not just mornings and evenings.
Fawns born this summer have lost their spots, but aren't thinking right yet.
They walk up to me and my dogs like we're family.
So beware, don't go knocking bark off trees.
Enjoy the fall sights.

My speedo checks out spot on with the radar traps set up at the start of towns.
4000rpm close to 63mph. I hit the rev limiter in top while passing a truck on a trip away recently. I know it will hit 7000rpm without the limiter kicking in.
It has done 100mph without being fully open (close though). Doing the math estimating at 7200 rev limiter (never hit it on purpose so don't know what it is set on) it says 113mph. I seriously doubt that but it does go pretty well.

Fastest I've done on the v7ii Stornello was 90 indicated by GPS. Was not a happy experience. This is with an adapted large Norge windscreen and saddlebags.
I think they were quite I'm sure I could have gone faster but just wasn't comfortable.
Very happy to stick in the 60 to 70 range for top end. Different story of course on the griso and the 1200 sport. Triple digits are easily attainable but I long ago gave up trying to see what the top speed was on a motorcycle.
-
I hit the ton once on my 1984 V65C. If it had any more in it, I didn't care or need to know. It would run 75 all day without sweating it.

Exactly!
I have no clue about top end on either my II or III. I don't find them fun above 65, and prefer winding roads at much lower speeds. LD runs on either on straight roads or the slab seem wrong. I am lucky to live where I never have to do that.
I have topped out my Griso and Norge -- Correction; I have topped myself out -- several years ago under ideal conditions (except for the rider ) at an indicated 125+ or so. I was afraid to look down if they got more than that, and doubt that they did.
Bill
P.S. Note to self: Check your meds, Bill. Agreeing with BD9 is troubling.

Hey buddy the clock is always right at least twice a day :-)

According to the speedo, Anni and I have hit 107ish. What that translates to in actual MPH, I haven't a clue. I don't find riding her at that speed particularly twitchy. That said, I enjoy regularly hitting the rev limiter on the Vespa.
-
I'd agree with Muzz on the B750 - got to about 105-107 indicated on the Bahn in Germany just me on the bike but hard luggage and a tail pack. For laughs, my SZR660 got to a indicated 115mph flat on the tank, and my SRX600 with 11-1 Wiseco and a race pipe got about 105 before I lost my nerve on the bumpy road between Manildra and Parkes.....
-
My V50 II seems to be very reluctant to go over 80 mph according to my gps speedo. This is sitting normally. I have checked everything, timing, carbs, compression and unless it is the pattern silencers creating too much back pressure that's it. I would love to know how the road testers got up to 100 MPH

Same here. In my less responsible days on a lonely straight I hit 200Km/h (125 mph) indicated with a naked '82 GS1100E -and it was still accelerating. But I decided that my helmet was flopping around too much and backed off. Fun, once. I lost a couple of friends in my twenties. One who lost an argument with a tree while riding his KZ900 too fast on a winding country road, the other a very fast lane cutting Honda 750 owner under the wheels of a large truck. And then my wife's boss took his Hyabusa at high speed into a ditch which ended suddenly. Which also ended his life suddenly. All self inflicted accidents, all of 'em died because of excessive speed. All closed caskets. Yeah, no I don't explore top speeds much anymore. Maybe on a salt flat...

Well I have heard it said, “the older you get the slower you get.”
Seems to resonate with some here. Luckily, I know some well aged boys who still like t to rock on two wheels.

"Faster faster.. until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death."

I hit 100 on the 2010 Cafe Classic and it was scary. Made me understand why hitting the ton back in the day was quite an accomplishment.
I haven't gone for top speed on the 2018 V7III but have seen 90.
My 2012 Concours 1400 could hit 90 in second gear in a few seconds so it was easy to see 120 in a short length of road. The 750s require some distance and time which increases the risk of someone noticing.
I do wonder if because of the 6 speed transmission if the bike would be faster in 5th.

I do not believe a V50 will do 100 unless serious performance mods have been undertaken or some sort of aerodynamic fairing added, and a rider under 130#

Ah, my dear (bad) Chad …
Some observations on yours, just above …
* You have no doubt heard the aphorism about old and bold pilots, which seems apropos here. If you have not, ask one one of those about it. Oh … never mind.
* I view nearly all high-speed runs on public roads and streets and juvenile and socially irresponsible. I have been both of those in every decade of my life, including more than once this very year.
* One takes risks when we even only mount our motos, but I trust that the benefits outweigh — no "ton pun intended," but it amuses easily amused me :azn: — the risks when we choose to flout the legal limits and the never-forgiving laws of physics.
* More importantly, however, than even those are our consciences if our risk/benefit analyses fail. Our unflattering mugshots would be the least of our concerns; the obit for the toddlers who died at the price of our fun would follow us, as it should, to our graves.
* So, yes, tho a very “well-aged boy” myself, but even one "who still likes [occasionally] to rock on two wheels,” you are probably right for many of us older moto-pilots: “the older you get the slower you get.”
* Resonates with me … well, until the red mist comes on and I get stooopid. :copcar:
BTW, I do miss seeing and riding with you and the other midwest gang after breakfasts at Starved Rock State Park and other venues. I think of that when I am near Hungry Mother S.P. in W.V. Such odd names.
Best to all.

I would be very happy if I could get between 85 and 90mph on my V50 II. It's not that I want to ride at that speed but more for quicker acceleration above 70 mph when overtaking a 65 mph truck with a trailer. Anything over 75 mph on an un-faired bike become a feat of endurance. The bike is delightful on minor roads at 50 - 60 mph as the steering is so good. This is why I like it but there is the niggling disappointment that it is not a little quicker.
I am still hoping some other V50 owners will respond to the original question.
-
According toColombo thev50 max speed was 165 omg.
-
My V 50 11 would get to 90 mph...the NTX 650 will do slightly more.
-
According toColombo thev50 max speed was 165 omg.
165 km/h = 102 mph.
My V50 III has only been roadworthy a few months so I haven't tried any top speed antics. Gets up to an indicated 80 (GPS says 76) mph pretty quick though and was still pulling. The big fairing I installed last night may not help.

140km on the Breva 750. Might have gone faster but I wasn't game.

140km on the Breva 750. Might have gone faster but I wasn't game.
A bit of weight on the back and mine is rock solid. Develops a slight weave at 80-85mph in sweepers, which is a wee bit off putting if one hits a bump at the same time.
The rear shocks are crap, but with the preload backed right off and a bit of weight on the back it is pretty stable overall.
