Title: Seat question LMIII
Post by: lucian on November 21, 2021, 04:13:47 PM
The factory seat on my LMIII is one solid hunk of rubber vs. an upholstered pan . Have been searching for a better alternative, comfort wise ,with no luck. Even an original style replacement seems unobtanium.  Any Ideas on how to get a more comfortable seat on this without destroying the original hunk of cheese? I have an Airhawk but it doesn't really work well on the narrow seat . Would a MkI or II seat work on the III without the the rear cowl? Have all winter to work something out . Would love a leather upholstered seat option.  Tia, dave

The original owner of my 83 Le Mans III put this seat on 39 years ago, when he bought it from Cycle Specialties. Not sure What brand it is, or it’s availability today. But, it is a comfortable seat.

When I had my III I had a Corbin Gunfighter on it, it worked out really good for me.

Thanks Steven,  I,ve seen the corbins on MKi's and II's And wonder if you have to surrender your original pan or if a MK I or II corbin will work on a III

I'd really like to keep the original rear cowl piece if possible but not essential I guess

Sargent made this one, I find it very comfortable. It’s not a stock seat pan and I don’t know what it is from but Curtis Harper could tell you.

Thanks John,  do you still have the rear cowl piece behind the seat?  not a big deal as I would keep the original parts and make or find a pan .  All i know is the original seat is now hard as a brick.

The seat on the white LM3 is a Gaman Comfort seat. After Gaman went out of business in the 90's . Stucchi has been manufacturing   that seat occasionally. It works with the  factory rear cowling and base.

I have a Gamman LM saddle around here too, somewhere <shrug>

I don’t have the tail. That bike has a nice chrome fender on the back

They also have a comfort seat but NA now. I wonder if it's hard crap I sat on for 50K mi. I was going to get one someday. I used a sheepskin rolled up. Look at the price, nope not soon now either.

Lately I been looking for the fairing brackets, the wings stuff is OK but fairing got flattened. I still have the stock fairing w/signals, half the white paint has peeled. I was using the AirTech one w/o signals. Have to fab it to the Sporty forks. I want it to look like stock, that's why I bought it new in 84. The last of the small LM's. Just want radial tires now.

Brand New, less than 300mi on my way to W. VA Rally in 84

Have you thought of finding a seat upholsterer? They can re foam and re cover your seat to your design and specs.

Hi Dave,
Hope you're doing well up in the north country.

You could haunt Ebay for a while, looking for an abused seat for that model or a related one, just to get the seat pan for an upholstery / seat shop.

Hi Joe, thanks, that's what I think i'll do There is one on ebay for $350.00 , I think I could probably make a pan in either metal or fiberglass and be able to keep my stock seat as it is in great shape other than being a brick.  My arse barely survived the ride down to your bike show at the drive in. Thinking of the long winter ahead and making up things to do to pass the time. Besides work.  Happy Holidays

Back when I got the Corbin seat for my III, the seat came with a Corbin made pan.

Lucian,

The Corbin seat on the III is excellent! They don't show it on their website now but it would be worth a call to them. If they still have the mold for the pan they may make one for you. They did that for me years ago when they stopped showing the LM IV / V. Oh, and no the LM I/II will not work on a III. The Stucci seat is better than stock but not nearly as supportive as the Corbin over long distances. You might also try contacting Mark at Moto Guzzi Classics to see what he has kicking around. Good luck!

The Gaman seat that was on it like the shown on the white bike broke, so wanting a steel pane and a more comfortable seat, I cut about 1 - 2  inches off a T3 pan, had the seat made then a t3 fender. There was a bit more to it than that, but that is the jist of it

Nice work Curtis, Works great and I like the shiny fender on the back. That is a super rider friendly bike and GREAT in those Arkansas curves!  :thumb:

Thank's Steve, Is your corbin a gunfighter style?  I am hoping to stay with a flat seat on it as I like to be able to move around a bit,

Thank you Curtis, appreciate you chiming in with that. Sounds like there is some minor differences in the early Tonti seat  mounting arrangements.  I may try my hand at banging out a pan to match the original and get a local shop to do the upholstering.  If something should pop up at your shop ring me up as would I would be interested .

If you don't mind sacrificing the original this is a good solution.

When I bought my LM2 I got 2 seats with it, one original and one that had been lowered! (who lowers a Lemans seat?).

I found the original too low, especially when combined with rearsets, meaning my knees were bent at a very acute angle whilst riding so I got a local company to re-model the lowered seat.
I had it made 30mm higher than the original seat but also put the hump/passenger portion further back and it is now much more bearable on the knees and also more comfortable padding-wise than the original plastic/foam seat.
I also prefer the look.
