Kind of like the can only have one MC topic, hard to have just one for some. For me two are on the top of the list.
My dad, and this guy, Both fearless and they taught me that while avoiding risks may prolong your life , it will never replace the experiences in life that only assuming risks provide.

We were at Bike week many years ago, when I said, "that's Evel Knievel." I didn't have my camera to take the picture of him with his arm around Dorcia.. (well, he *was* a dawg until his dying day..)

Most are aviation related. The first that came to mind was Steve Wittman, but there are others..

Well, Dad of course. WWII vet, purple heart recipient, hard worker, great parent, and devout Christian.
AND, Jay Springsteen, winner of three consecutive A.M.A. Grand National Championships in 1976, 1977, and 1978. He accumulated 43 Grand National Championship dirt track victories during a career that spanned almost 30 years and a all around nice guy.
-
My Dad.
My Grandmother (my mom's mom) and Jimmy Carter.
-AJ
-
Professionally, i'd say Anthony Bourdain, Jose Andres, Danny Meyer, and Daniel Humm. All for very different reasons.
In life, my Dad, my uncle Rick, and my maternal Grandparents would be the top picks.
On the ole Guzzi board It's gotta be a tie between Chuck Stottlemyer and Dave Swanson! Two really kind guys who know their stuff, have the best toys, and are devoted family men!
-
Tazio Nuvolari.
Past Italian racer of motorcycles and cars.
Ferdinand Porsche called him "the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future."
But mostly my Uncle Benny... R.I.P.
-
My Dad, Tom Zastro, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa.
-
My dad. Died when I was in 2nd grade when he was 41 years young of cancer. He was a World War II veteran and was in the battle of the bulge under General George S. Patton. I have a letter of recognition from Patton to my dad. That in my opinion is pretty awesome. R.I.P. Keith Lester Olson!
-
Carl Sagan, Ian Anderson, Elon Musk, David Attenborough. Not in that order though.
Scott

No hero's as such, but I admire my wife for her work ethic and tolerating me...and me for the strength I never knew was there until dealing with the crap of the last few years
-
I say all hard working parents that work hard every day to feed their familiy, no matter where on this planet. To me is billionairs, Hollywood stars, etc. no heroes……
-
All the military and police men and women who put their lives on the line every day, to keep the American people safe.
Dan

Oh come on Dan, that’s so cliche! Are you running for public office?
-
Come on chad, gotta answer the question ,

HERO ?
that's a big word, but bike related it has to be this guy for me!
Still taking the podium top step, in a sport where most retire before reaching 30!

but i don't think ha can hold up to Mr. Jarvis... not at all...

Of whom I have known personally one was my primary glider flight instructor. He spent countless hours in the rear cramped, hot cockpit training us not to kill him or ourselves, did it in a though but easy going manner. Usually spent all day Saturday and Sunday training and totally volunteer at that. He had also served in the AF as a F-102 and F-106 pilot back in the day when it was a lot more work and things not as reliable as now.
Also as already mentioned, Jimmy Carter.

Muhammad Ali, stood up for what he believed in no matter the consequences. Sergeant Mitchner (sp?)in basic training, didn't want any of his troops to be killed or wounded in Nam for lack of training. He treated us with respect and professionalism but worked us to near death, lol. Albert Einstein for looking outside the box further than anyone could imagine. My dad of course, very smart, built our first tv from scratch with parts and pieces scrounged from all over including probably Uncle Sam.

To be honest, is this a Guzzi related subject? Based on this is a international forum is it just a matter of time before someone not see a solider etc. as a hero and the heat is on……
-
The late Professor Fred Hollows.
Sir David Attenborough.
Nelson Mandela.

Other than my uncles and my dad, a fella by the name of James B Tatum. He was a friend and mentor to me for many years. Summarization: Korean War veteran, 2 purple hearts and Bronze star with valor for heroic action. Spent almost 500 days in a hospital recovering from wounds sustained in battle. Entrepreneur and business owner. College Founder, community servant leader.
Recently, I was able to get him inducted into the Missouri Veterans Hall of Fame. A true honor for me to be part of that. He will be a member of this Hall of Fame until the end of time and his plaque is on display in the Capitol of Missouri along with others in the Hall, including President Harry S Truman.
We recently held a Veterans Day Celebration in his hometown of Pineville Missouri, honoring all veterans and spotlighting his induction.
Here is the news article on that: https://www.fourstateshomepage.com/news/local-news/mcdonald-county-celebrates-veterans-one-locals-induction-into-missouri-veterans-hall-of-fame/
For those with Facebook, here's the entire ceremony where you'll see me present his widow with the award: https://www.facebook.com/PinevilleMO/videos/1071844886902078

I hope he doesn’t read this..
I saw a side of him that I’ll not forget, when my Norge lunched it’s bevelbox. He was away in Townsville at that point, but told me over the ‘phone..
“Just go to Michael’s shop and take a (near) new one off the shelf...
That’ll get you (900 km) home and leave the ****’ed one with us...”
No charge.
On the ‘phone to him yesterday, he’s doing a refresh on my Norge after Mandello 2022 for it’s 220,000 k milestone.
Hero..? Dunno, but for the purposes of this post, I take your point as valid.
-
Hero, as it is used today, has been watered down and applied to too many for just doing their job.

That's ok , you don't have to be super man to be somebody's personal hero. Too many to list, but for me , anyone who makes someone else day a little brighter is a hero. Heroic acts can seem very small to some I guess, but still guessing you have a few too my friend.
-

So, Bad Chad, are you saying that the people who have put their lives on the line for the betterment of others unselfishly are just "doing their job?" I beg to differ. If you were in say......and accident, or being threatened by some of the various nut jobs we have in our society or seriously inquired will you call 911 and ask for someone to come to your aid just "do their job" Or would you rather have someone go above and beyond and possibly be heroic?
I'm a firm believer the real heroes in our midst should be held to a higher esteem and given our full respect. Thank you veterans, military personnel, police, firefighters and first responders.

Let me pile on. Several years ago, Pete "sold" me the Mighty Scura. One of the denizens of another forum's son was fighting for his life. Pete told me to just send the boy's dad a check for the amount..

Can I have that again ?

I was going to post something. Had it all written regarding my personal heroes, and then scrolled down to see that the thread had already gone sideways. Deleted what I wrote and posting this instead.
Nice thread Lucian. To bad it went sideways so fast.

Please don’t do that TWA.
We must not step away when this happens but instead provide our own positive spin back onto things to retain our track.
Dan will handle it I’m sure...
What was your experience ?

Chuck and Dorcia are my heroes .

good folks

My whole reason for starting this thread was to let people to identify with some of the building blocks of their past. The influence's that got them to where they are now in their lives. For anyone to have an issue with peoples own experiences in this regard is not part of my plan. While we all have our own interpretation on who should be considered a hero and who shouldn't , that's subjective. All I know is I chose my dad first as he was a WWII fighter pilot and was my ultimate hero for all the reasons many here have recognized. If you don't agree or think you you don't need to recognize the true hero's among us', good luck to you , but you'll likely never make this list

Without a doubt Michael Meehan.
He's in his teens now, but from the day he was born as a Downs Syndrome child, he held a special place in my heart.
Every DS child or adult I've come to know, brings a raw purity of soul and emotion, that I find extremely endearing and inspiring in this sometimes crazy cruel world, that seems to filled with far too many hollow shells.
Michael was stricken with early childhood cancers many times, and he's literally lived at least half his life, as the "Boy in the Bubble", while his immune system would be destroyed for yet again another bone marrow transplant or experimental treatment.
When he was 9, he had just finished a year of one of those exhausting, body destroying procedures, and returned to school just in time for track and field day. He had a personal aid on each side helping to hold him up, and they literally dragged him around the 1/4 mile track, he finished miles behind the other kids.
As Michael celebrated with his family and friends at the finish line, the organizers announced over the PA to clear the track for the next event; unaided, dead tired, completely exhausted, Michael had enough pride and brass balls, he literally jogged off the track alone, head high, with purpose.
It was a Charlie Hustle performance, that Pete Rose himself would've been envious of.
I've copied in a link of the video, not sure with FB permissions if it will be viewable, hopefully I've described it well enough to convey the inspiration he embodies.

Thomas Jefferson. The guys on Flight 93. My daughter who understands graduate-level physics. My step-daughter who understands me. Luap.
-
Not really 'Heroes' but these people have been my role models. No order, just as they come to mind
My grandfather, John McDonnell made me who I am more than any other. From history,
Teddy Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr, George Patton, Robert E. Lee, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Charles Surgeon, Colin Powell, Emil Kaupan. All for various reasons and aspects.
-
A hero is subjective, for some the bar might be set higher to be called a hero..If a person claims the term hero is been over used, that's that how they see it... Accept it and be a hero,
-
My parents would be my first choice but also my paternal and maternal grandparents for having left their home country to travel to this foreign land with little to no money and just hope for a better life.
-
The list seems to evolve over the years . Currently , Kenny Roberts Sr. , Steven Hawkins & Jimmy Carter . Subject to change , of course .

Leaving personality aside, I admire Eddie Rickenbacker. Rose from nothing, sold rags and bones to help his mom feed the family. Self trained mechanic and engineer. Started a car company. Put 4 wheel brakes on his cars when others said they were unsafe. Champion car racer. Owned the Indy Racetrack. Was El Jeffe at Bendix, GM, Eastern Airlines. Was Chauffer to General Blackjack Pershing. Was America's highest scoring Ace in WWI. Survived war, injury, poverty, airplane and car crashes, being stranded at sea. Used his popularity to spy for the US Govt. (https://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/thumbs/eddie-rickenbacker-1.jpg)

George Orwell, Leo Szilard, George Greenough, Alfred Russell Wallace, Wayne Gardner and many others. Maybe I don't exactly have heroes, just people who I think lead an inspiring life. So many. Marie Curie, Anne Welch, Hazel Dickens.......Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger....
BTW none of them are saints. As Orwell said, "Saints make very poor human beings, and human beings make very bad saints".
Special mention to the late Neville Prothero, who taught me to ride a motorcycle. A great mechanic, man who liked a beer and a laugh, and a patient teacher, great fisherman and sometimes participant in Dads mad schemes....such as the Honda CB350 MX sidecar.......

Awesome pictures! Something about two Gatling guns firing through your propeller would make me more than a little nervous!
-
Not gatling guns. The cooling shroud around the gun barrels make it look that way. The propeller had cam mechanism that would not allow the guns to fire if a blade was in front of them.

Once you learn to always steer into the slide.... someone taking it sideways is not a problem!!!!
Learned that from Marcus Aurelius and Viktor Frankl.

A thread is an organic thing, it evolves into what it becomes. It's like giving birth to a child, you give it life but at the end of the day you can't control it forever

Very, very, well said. Timeless practical wisdom for the internet age. I bow in respect to my sensei!!!

The new version: "You are the slave of all those who interpret your original post!"
Luckily, the magic button allows us to abort our virtual offspring at any time!!

I'm adding Lucky Phil to my expanded list of heroes!
Which also includes everyone who doesn't get their panties in a wad from reading shite on the internet.
I suspect those same people are on NCDan's and Luap's hero list also........

My heroes aren't the superstars who achieve great things after being given every advantage, but the average person on the street who overcomes adversity, achieves something significant, or who even just continues to function as a decent person on a daily basis.
For example:
- If you look into their backgrounds, Max Biaggi is much more a hero to me, than either Mark Marquez or Valentino Rossi.
- the police on the front line during the BLM and Occupy Wall Street civil unrest/riots. Every day I marveled at these humans working 18 hours days for weeks, getting insulted 1,000's of times each day, yet not losing their emotional control and randomly shooting their tormentors.
- the kids working drive thru fast food restaurants serving several hundred people each day, with less than a handful each day saying "Thank you," "Have a good day," or keep up the good work.
- military veterans and current military service members.
- on the philosophical side, James Allen, Marcus Aurelius, Viktor Frankl and multiple religious and political people who can't be mentioned. Any and all who teach, that each of us is responsible for ourselves, and those who think others are to blame for our thoughts, mental states, and behavior is a loser's game.
- people who age gravely and don't become miserable and nasty due to the daily aches and pains and continual loss of capabilities.
- the stranger in the grocery store, or home improvement store, etc. that makes an effort to share a kind word or a laugh with people they don't know.
Luckily, those heroes are everywhere. You just have to be self-aware enough to recognize them.
-
QUOTE: "Who's your hero?"
At the end of the day, my grandfather, WW I veteran and my father, WW II veteran....
Both were loving, honest, family men, with real compassionate, human values... :thumb:  :boozing:

But here are a couple or few:

Marcus Rashford, a talented footballer from a poor background, who stood up to the attacks from Members of Parliament and their allies in the press saying he should stick to playing football, and from the inevitable racists, and by his persistence created enough noise to force the government to back down on their refusal to extend free school dinners during the pandemic, and who is now using his profile to launch a book club to promote literacy.

No such thing as a hero, I suppose. I admire lots of folks. These spring to mind:
T.E. Lawrence. Enthusiastic motorcyclist. Told the King to stuff his honors.
Dolly Parton. Don't like her music but her heart is in the right place. Sends books to kids.
Mother Jones. Kicked ass and took names. Represented the real Greatest Generation.
