Started working on my latest project...
(https://i.ibb.co/vhJqFdz/20210215-183857.jpg) (https://ibb.co/vhJqFdz)
I've been collecting parts and even started to machine a rear axle...

Out of space for projects but been offered another... It's a Bavarian Money Waster in a basket. 1961 R50/2 with 1971 R75 engine & gearbox. Ran when parked, but dismantled by owner who has lost interest. It has a title. The original engine is included, but the original gearbox may be missing. Don't know nothing about BMWs. Seems like I should be picking up an Eldo rather than learning BMWs, but is appealing. What do you think?

What is welded on top of that gas tank?
-
/2 - airhead conversions are somewhat sought after, sort of like Tritons for librarians. It should be a great project.
-
First picture, 350 Ariel?

I've seen some beautifully done /2's with /5 motors but they are somewhat frowned upon in most Beemer circles, certainly taking a hit upon resale. I'd dig up a box for the /2 motor and restore it using funds from sale of /5 motor.
I loved my 1971 R75/5 but a /2 would have been neat as sneakers!!
EDIT: Oops, just saw earlier post. That's not my experience but maybe times ..they are a changin'... :boozing:

I've yet to see an 'appealing' BMW but thats my own cross to bear. If it speaks to you, go for it!
-
Good going on the projects! Both look like worthy opponents.
I have one BMW, a 1966 R69S. I need to clean the slingers one day so I can ride it more. It is due.

I (re)built this /2 conversion for my buddy Leo. Whoever built it originally kind of cobbled things together and I had to sort them out. R75/6 engine, /5 transmission and electrics. Was great fun to ride.

I acquired four Stornello’s over the past year (one just for parts). A scrambler, a sport and an ISDT. The scrambler and the ISDT are almost done and the sport is awaiting assembly. Here’s the ISDT waiting only for the seat from the upholsterer and I need to source or make a chain guard yet…. Coming along nicely, hope everyone has success with their winter projects!!

My that is one stunning ISDT bike, you set a very high bar with your immaculate restorations Dave.
Shawn; the BMW singles are very interesting machines, I know of two that have been locally restored, I have never ridden one but I am told they are good solid machines but that they are very slow. I know you will finish with a top notch restoration, the Brit iron looks challenging!

Thx for the compliment!!! As always the devil’s in the details
I strive to do a good job on my restorations with a pretty strick attention to originality!!
Thx, dave

Filler neck for a panel tank.

Yes, 350 NG originally shipped from Ariel to Holland as part of the Nederlands Relief winter 1946. Engine crankcase was originally a 500cc VG sent to Belfast April 1947. How all these parts ended up in my hands is a mystery! It will be built as a 500cc VH bitsa.

Thanks for the encouragement!
Charlie - how did you make the /6 engine look less like a suit case???

Great looking Stornello Dave. You have some very interesting bikes in your byline!

I'm going to make a new front axle for the V11 from Titanium. Should be interesting machining wise.
Ciao

Phil, I've seen your V11 avatar for years but didn't notice how special it is - OHC Daytona engine! Now titanium axles? The original axles on the Ariel are 9/16" diameter mild steel. The axles on the rigid frame bikes are always bent!
I'm just starting to learn how to cut threads, but it's worked out OK in steel.

Yours looks nicely done to me, nice threading. I'm no machinist but I have turned a few Ti bushes etc for my bike but I've never thread cut Titanium or machined an axle out of Ti. It's a bit more challenging to machine than steel or even Stainless but I'll risk $100 in materials and see. I'm upgrading to the later series V11 Le Mans forks with 43mm legs and 25mm axle and I don't have an axle so thought I'd give it a go. Saves getting a steel one plated as well.

The three projecrs I have on the go this year, the slow progress recorded over on the Bike Builds section of the forum, 1948 Airone, 1961 Aermacchi Ala Verde tribute and a Benelli 200 Sprite 'egg motor'/

Huh, never thought of that until you pointed it out. Besides Guzzi, Aermacchi and Motobi/Benelli did any other Italian motorcycle manufacturers make a lay down single?

That’s a rare beast, interesting looking head castings

A /2, /5 conversion with a sidecar that I worked on. It originally had been built as a solo, the hack was installed later but had never been tuned. It had plenty of power to pull the Steib around, but the bike ergos weren't very good for a tug.

That tank is a BEAST! The bike looks great but that must be 60 lbs of fuel.

It's no big deal, really. I just cut some threads in Ti for my little airplane project.

Ok Chuck, no special tool rake or clearance requirements etc? Thread cutting is obviously done at low speeds and my bigger concern was the drilling really. From what I've seen Ti doesn't shed heat well into the chips so it stays in the tool and piece esp down a drilled hole. It's also springy. I've machined Ti small Ti bushes but thats a bit different to a 300mm axle.

The owner told me that the tank was some rare German aftermarket tank and was supposedly worth big money. The owner wasn't the builder. He said he'd bought it from a BMW dealer in the Midwest, maybe Missouri?
