Title: Stornello pipes
Post by: Air-Cooled on December 16, 2021, 07:53:29 AM
My 2016 Stornello's header pipes weren't looking so good.  The coppery metal finish was getting splotchy blue and then the dreaded garbage bag melt on hot pipes completely trashed them.  So I had Jet-hot do a coating for me. The resulting color (Yellow-brass they call it) was far from original, but acceptable for me.

They look good. I take it this is a ceramic coating?

Plastic melted onto an exhaust should be removable, no? I’ve had success with the few times materials that melted onto the pipes.

I’m surprised your headers blued. I thought the V7 Stornello’s pipes were stainless steel.

I don't know whether the pipes are stainless or not, but when new they have a copper colored plating on the surface.  With use, that finish starts looking splotchy blue.  If it were that alone, I would have left them, but with the melted plastic I would have had to mess things up even more.  And yes, the paint is ceramic.  I was surprised at how much it cost to have them coated:  $375 which included shipping.   But overall, I'm happy I did it.  Replacing those pipes is prohibitively expensive.  Below is a pic of my bike compared to another one with blued pipes.

That's nice, and they actually look like stainless steel!  Good price for sure.

They are SS.. Leaking brake fluid from the always overfilled master Cyl. makes for some of the blotches on the pipes.

The pipes for sale on the eBay link above appear to be stainless, but the pipes that come on most of the Stornello bikes sold in the US do not look stainless.  And I don't think the bluing here is from brake fluid.

Mine are stainless for sure. The blueing, and or brown color is what happens to Stainless when heated.. My tig welder does the same thing to SS.. It's non magnetic and to as what grade I don't know. The brown is crawling up the muffler now, and the back half is Brushed SS color.. The blueing (heat) is not from the brake fluid the blotching on the pipe can be. (in my case)

The Arrow 2:1 exhaust on the Stornello is stainless steel.

I just checked my pipes with a magnet, and you are correct that they are non-magnetic stainless.

Interesting. I didn’t know stainless steel blued.  I thought it just turned gold. Learning stuff all the time!

I didn't know that either.  I've had Staintune pipes and all they did was yellow.  In any event I bought an additional set of pipes from the eBay link above.  The seller has a few sets and accepted $550 for an entire new Arrow exhaust.  Just buying the header pipes from Guzzi is way more than that.
