I now have correct alloy wheels (thanks to BC) to replace my cracking spoked wheels on my Mille. I am considering a color change to black or gold. What is the general consensus on paint or powder coat? I have access to both and prices are somewhat comparable. The powder coater wants to sand blast before coating, paint shop will dip to remove previous coating, which I believe is powder. All ideas welcome!

BTW what happened to the Mille wheels. Really nice quality, Akront rims. Should I check mine?

Cracking between spoke holes is what led me down this path. Apparently there was a recall or warranty replacement deal in the 90s. I clearly missed the deadline on that one. Would either of you powdercoat proponents care to expand one your reasoning? I wory about losing edge flange details and contamination with sandblasting. The paint guys dip them to strip and can remachine edge the surface and remove some edge dings. The powder coater can blast and powder coat only.. Any color opinions?

Powdercoat is more durable. Being peppered with dirt, gravel and other road debris I would go that route

They aren't perfect but they look pretty good and i think they will add to the bike

Tire beads fit very tight on some rims. I made the mistake of powder coating between the flanges and it was almost impossible to seat the bead. There is masking tape for powder.

There is a very small amount in one of the wheel bearing bores that I think I can remove. The cush spigot is clean and free of powdercoat. I am afraid that they might not have been as clean as would be best before coating, there is some tire residue evident in the area between the beads etc. so I am not sure how he cleaned them. He has a bead blast cabinet and a vapor hone setup. I wish I had asked to see them after he cleaned them and before he coated them. He is doing some othe small pieces for me now. I am old enough now that perfection matters less and less, none of this can be taken with us our final journeys, so maybe the next guy gets to deal with the flaws and imperfections. It is going to look great!

In honoring Guzzi content(aka inexpensive way to do stuff), allow me to mention an alternative to powder coating. Duplicolor or VHT wheel paint, combined with its respective clear coat, can provide a reasonable cost way to get cast wheel to look better. The color below on my bike (VHT) was intended for matching Chevy Rally Wheels. Other colors are available. As the various tints originally on cast wheels either faded , lost the clear coat, or otherwise are not longer as when new, this could work reasonably well. Blasting is ok, but not necessary ( esp. if it cost $ >Guzzi content again) if the wheels are scrubbed clean/ flaking paint sanded/etc and are pre-paint prepped. Links to VHT and Duplicolor.

I ran into problems between the caliper bracket and the inside surface of the rotor mounting plate. I ending up modifying both. The caliper bracket has cast in ridges for reinforcement and the rotor mount plate is just a little high, so some got removed from both and then repainted. The new rotor doesn't mount exactly as the old.
Please disregard the messy shop, I told you I wasn't Chuck. The top plug is missing from the drive housing because there is no lube in there. I'm out, so tomorrow for that. Housing powdercoated, bracketry painted and baked for a couple of hours, wheel balanced, wheel weights painted. Anal much???!!!

Rattle cans with good prep are dandy and a fraction of the cost of powder coat or "pro" painting.

Thank you fotoguzzi! This bike is 33 years old and I've owned it for 30 of those years. I haven't put many miles on it but it has been my favorite to ride for a long time. I am very happy with the way it turned out. I got the SPII fairing mounted last spring and got it painted to match in the late summer so I have now completed most of my wish list, a list built over the years of living with this bike. I do have a few other things I would like to accomplish with it yet but at 71 years old they are less and less important. Impatient now for riding weather, icy this morning.
