Title: RPM limit of late Model MGs?
Post by: bad Chad on December 23, 2021, 05:23:45 PM
The B1100 I have trips the light fantastic at 7600 as I recall, no matter how hard I try, it won't go for more, less something might go Boom!  My newer SB 17 v9 will not go beyond 6800, but to it's credit, it has a considerably stronger torque spread.  I'm just wondering what the difference might be among small blocks?  The v9 is done at 6800, are the other SB the same?

I'm sure the V9 came with an adjustable rev limiter just as the V7s did. They come from the factory set on the low side.
I have never set my V7 higher so it will cut out early, I often hit the rev limiter in 1st and 2nd taking off at the lights.

Adjustable change light, red line was limited by the ECU for run in then is defaults to the factory's setting.

I know all that fella’s,  I’m talking about the Max allowable rpm that the ECU will allow.

The Revlimiter will not allow it to spin over 6800, at least with stock map.

I don't know about either of my smallblocks.

But I assume it varies by model just from what I see you've posted here and from hp ratings on some models like the V85.

The original V85 was listed as having peak hp at 7750 rpm and the current version at 7980 rpm, so I'll assume they probably rev higher than 6800.

High RPM might sound impressive, but how the engine pulls is what's important.
I'd rather have good power where you need it most.
That's why old ironhead Harleys had 4 speed gearboxes.
Pulled from the basement, no need for 14,000 RPM

Stock V9 rev limit is 7100 RPM.

V7/V7II is 7200 RPM
V7III is 7250

I once asked my Triumph dealer what the redline was on my 78 bonneville. He sad X, and it will do X x amount of times. Turned out if X was 8000rpm, x was 1.

Those numbers seem low to me

That's the rev limit in the maps.

Not being critical, but I’m not sure why you would want to rev a small block to the absolute limit. Seems to me the horsepower increases as you go up, and things are lively between 5 and 6K.  But the show is pretty much over just past 6,000, so time to upshift.

I don't doubt your correct, I'm just curious to know if they vary, and if so, what is gained or loss.

The rpm limit on smallblocks is different from your big breva. My tach-o-meter, 2007 Nevada v7, twin throttle bodies, says yellow at 7000, red at 8000. As hard as i try I can’t hit the rev limiter. I’m assuming the engineer at Guzzi has blessed it up to that range. I’ll consistently ride rpm to 6800-7000. It’s amazing how much engine braking there is to be had, or the honking great pull when i shift it and land at 5000-5500 with all ponies breathing hard…yeah baby. Itsa gutzee, it gets better the harder you beat on it. But that doesn’t mean I’m going too fast for the conditions..

I’ve got a photo of my tach around here somewhere

someone with v7, I, II, III?

Doesn't apply to the Breva which is a 4V motor, but I had a problem with my 8V Norge that it would not rev past 6000. Just spun up there and hovered.  Ended up that the right side cam timing was off by 1 tooth on the chain. Ran fine otherwise.

I know the 1200 Sport makes max power at 7500, and rev limiter cuts in at 8K.

My Audace would hit the rev limiter about 7,000. It didn't just hang but cut the fuel completely with corresponding feeling like something broke. I only hit it twice. Never have hit it with the V7lll.
