Title: can a front main bearing be converted
Post by: ray bear on February 04, 2022, 02:06:37 AM
Have finished converting my non oil filter engine to filter and have just about all the parts needed except a std front main bearing for the filter model and have tried all of Australia, My main supplier of parts in Perth is saying about 6 to 8 weeks before he gets stock and would take me that long if I ordered from the states and i would like to get it back together soon, "SO" short of machining a 10 thou undersize which are available back to standard and I wont can the centre white metal bearing be pressed from a non oil filter bearing flange and put in a later oil filter bearing flange as I have an old bearing from a filter motor . Yes Im being a real Karen and want the motor now.  Thanks Ray

Pretty sure the non oil filter bearings have the oil supply hole at 6 o'clock, and the filter bearings have the oil Supply hole at about 8 o'clock, so if you would have to re drill that hole without damaging/distorting the internal surface.

I think I have a reasonably good standard front bearing if your interested. I'm in NSW so you could prob have it in your hands by monday/Tuesday with express postage.

If your keen on it send me a PM, I'll have to measure it up to be sure it's still within speck and my memory serves me correct.

Hi 1down5up and thanks for the offer and will give it thought, I have been spending a lot on the motor so far and my preference would be to keep it all new, I also have access to a used bearing but has seen a lot of dirty oil so wont be using it, I dont have that bearing in my hand and unable to compare the two bearings types  and motor hence my question about adapting , so hoping some one else has been down this path and get a yes or no.   but thanks again and your offer not forgotten .Your right about oil holes not aligning but you would be drilling into the centre trough not the bearing surface.  I should just be patient and wait for a new bearing but my workshop is running out of space and would like to get another bike in soon.

Perhaps Stein-Dinse could get it to you quicker? My latest order from them arrived two days after it was shipped! Yes, that was Germany to the US, but nobody else in Europe ships that fast in my experience. Just a thought.

Thanks Charlie , were running out of stocks of many things here and our postage system resembles something like Wells Fargo and when you wait for 4 to 10 weeks for a delivery it gets annoying , I will call them and see if they have any postage time records to Australia.  out of curiosity I played with an old bearing this morning and didn't take much to push it out but if the retainer tube was left out I dont think it would have spun in use.
