Title: Swede is Down
Post by: SmithSwede on March 08, 2022, 07:48:26 PM
Well, fate finally caught up with me last Sunday.   I experienced the joy of a low-side to the right, about 20 miles per hour.  Right foot was caught under the bike, giving me a trimalleolar ankle facture.  It appears I may be able to avoid surgery, screws and pins, but I'll definitely be in a cast for six to eight weeks.

It had just started to rain, I was going straight on an access road, moderate braking, right next to a 7-11 gas station.  Everything was fine, I felt no warning, just down instantly.  I strongly suspect I hit some spilled diesel.  Snapped off the right side foot-peg and right side mirror, but otherwise bike seems ok.

Ironically, I broke 150,000 miles on the odometer of the V7 on this trip, and was thinking that was my milestone for the day.  Little did I know that the real milestone of this journey would be winding up in the ER.

Bummer!  No hospital stay.  Not an accident.  Just a bad get off.  Stay well and do what the Doc says.  Take the time to recover. 👍

Well, that's one way to remember a milestone! Glad its not too serious.

Many times a "blindside". Crutches for a bit?

Crap. Sorry to see this, but happy it wasn’t worse. Better get your ankle and that V7 of yours back in top shape <3

If you are avoiding surgery with a trimalleolar ankle fracture you are doing real real well. Surgery is the usual and customary treatment. You must not have fractured it fully and it is stable. Those fractures are inherently unstable. Good news.

So sorry to hear this, Swede! At least it was only 20 mph, and you're (hopefully) able to avoid surgery.
Wishing you a speedy recovery... as speedy as it can be anyway. I'm four weeks into rib fracture recovery myself (not due to a get-off thankfully), so I'm with you in spirit.
Did you have engine guards on the trusty V7?

Something very similar happened to me when I first started riding. I fell again scrambling to get to my bike to shut it off because the throttle was locked wide open. I am not a great leaner to this day because of that. I couldn't see anything wrong with the roadway but it was slick as heck either diesel fuel or trans fluid. Got well soon. Fortunately you should still have good riding ahead of you.   :thumb:

I've had an ankle fracture with 3 screws, but I didn't know what a trimalleolar ankle facture was, so I had to google for a photo. I shouldn't have, that looks nasty.

Congrats, you're definitely a high miler, but that's a hell of a way to mark the milestone.

Diesel or oil with a light rain on top, yup, that will put you down quick.

Sorry to hear about the bad break, hope it heals well.

Echoing all that’s been said SS.
A huge distance on that V7 BTW, I was thinking it was a goodly distance on my Norge at 125,000 miles.

That’s blown that theory....Good for you and all the best...

Wow ... the impressive, but uncoveted, distinction of LD mileage award and ER visit on same jaunt!

BTDT lowside adventure.  Always an "interesting" experience.

I suspect that your real first thoughts -- after the surprised expletives -- were of the "how's my Guzzi!?"

Best wishes for a rapid return to the saddle.

Sorry to hear of this Swede.  Spilled diesel sounds like a good theory.  The stuff, esp w a light rain, is a real threat.

And glad to hear of the smallblock's longevity!!!

Impressive mileage but very sorry about the injury. What type of footwear were you wearing? I deer took out my front end 4 years ago and I highsided my Royal Enfield and the bike landed on my ankle. I was only wearing logger boots (well actually I was dressed....) and I am reminded of this every day since. Heal well!

Whenever I pull into the pumps, where they also have diesel at each pump, I stay a few feet away.  I am amazed at how many people that pump diesel spill it on the ground.  Must be people buying fuel for their tractors and such. or diesel just has that tendency.

Sorry to hear about the fracture and hope the rest of your body isn't too sore.

Best wishes for a by the book recovery, SS.

As we know ice can be a nasty surprise, but I've almost 'lost it' twice, over the past 72 years riding. Both events on banked curves where the front tire skated out on a video disc. That last time was 2 yrs. ago. Dabbing with my left foot, to regain balance was dammed painful but it worked.
Good fortune through your recovery.   R3~

I will caution you if you use a knee scooter they are extremely dangerous and easy to roll.
If you et a need scooter get one with large inflatable rubber tires and they roll over bumps and door thresholds much easier than small hard wheeled units. Also when turning be extremely careful especially when your weight pushes out over the scooter. Take it slow and shift your weight when turning.

Quite coincidentally, this was exactly part of the conversation Swede and I had last night, having had the opportunity to use a knee scooter a couple of years ago after an Achilles tendon surgery.  They can tip over quite easily especially going around corners at speed!

Swede did sound in good spirits and as feisty as ever, so I'm sure he'll be up and riding in short order assuming he follows doctor's orders!

Sorry to hear and I wish you a speedy recovery! I am not a physician but I worked as an athletic trainer and saw several of these fractures over the years. I suggest you have a serious discussion with your doctor regarding the pros and cons of surgery. From my experience surgery has been the chosen treatment in order to insure that the bones are aligned properly and provide for the fastest recovery. I hesitated to say anything as I'm not familiar with your particular injury. I share my experience only as a source of food for thought. Getting a second opinion for your peace of mind certainly couldn't hurt. Good luck!!

Sorry to hear that, I hope you recover quickly.

I went down two years ago,  c. 15 mph, right hander, slid on the painted white line and also trapped my right foot under the bike.  ER sent me home saying soft tissue damage.  The following week I saw an orthopede who said the shock of this kind of injury travels up the leg and often breaks the fibula high up or damages its connection to the knee.  Sure enough, I had a fractured fibula and wore a cast for a few weeks.  The crack was above the ankle x-ray done by the ER.

Btw, my accident was not on a lightweight Guzzi, but a 750# ST1300.  Ankle is not 100%, even today.

Thanks for the good wishes from everyone!

They were Sidi RoadRider boots.

Have to admit.  What is almost worse than the pain is the self-criticism.  There is a very loud part of me that just keeps saying that while I can come up with all kinds of reasons, theories and excuses, but the bottom line is I somehow screwed up.   See X-ray.

But I have excellent, 24/7 nursing care.

so if he does respond within a couple days it should be most interesting on the happy pills.....

hoping surgery is the final fix - after the pills.

He goes into hiding and can't be reached by email , cell phone , or smoke signals . Some of us think he comes from another dimension and only appears sporadically in this one , or maybe he is only an illusion , a manifestation of mass hypnosis . He does appear in Cedar Vale every year wearing that funny foam cowboy hat and asking where the nearest aroma therapist is , who knows where he truly exists the other 360 days of the year .

I know where he was one other day this year when he dropped in on our new home in NM a few weeks back. He appeared to ride in but maybe he just appeared around the curve before our driveway.

Ok, the Swede is back.   :gotpics:  All ankle bones grown back in a way to make the orthopedic surgeon smile.  I’m walking, albeit slowly, and without a cane most of the time.  I even rode the slightly wrecked V7 around the block.  Yeah, the ankle hurts a lot, and it hurts most of the time, and did I mention it hurts a lot—but hey, I’m back on my feet.

I was feeling so salty about my recovery that I ventured down to a motorcycle dealer today . . . but I’ll make that a separate thread.
