Title: V9 max torque
Post by: tris on March 19, 2022, 01:30:10 AM
I read somewhere the other day tha the V9 lump delivers peak torque at just 3000 rpm.

Is that right.

If it is,  it goes a long way in explaining why it feels similar to the B1100 I used to own at lower speeds

V9 claimed 55 hp at 6250rpm and 45.7 lb-ft. at 3000rpm : https://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/moto-guzzi/2016-moto-guzzi-v9-bobber-and-v9-roamer-first-ride-review.html

Cheers,  it was a similar article that prompted the question

The similar sized V7iii an V85 seem to have their peak torques at virtually double the RPM with not a massive increase in peak torque

I just find it interesting

Having a maximum torque at 6000 rpm does not necessarily mean that there is less at 3000 rpm.

I thought that the increase to 59 Ft/Lbs was significant. Even at 5000 RPM on the 21 V85 models.  The curve being fairly flat is the important part, at least to me when I ride. I see no big peaks when twisting the throttle a bit harder than normal.  I may need to test ride a V7 to see if the difference in character s great when combined with a lighter motorcycle.

POSSIBLY SOLVED - it's another bit of random Moto Guzzi data /typo

Chart is from Moto Guzzi (blue dotted line is mine) and max torque is clearly not at 3K!

I suspect strongly the error is in the graphic not that data.

It's an issue of resolution/accuracy of the graphic. Multiple separate Dyno reports (including CW in their verbal summary) give peak torque as listed at an rpm around 3k or within a few hundred rpm. It's much more likely that figure is exact from the Dyno summary than the graphic, especially the simplified graphic used in that CW article.

References:

CW: 45.7 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,000 rpm

Motorcycle.com: 46.4 ft. lbs. @ 3200 rpm

EDIT - that said, as others have noted, the more significant part is the flatness of the curve. But I also think the V9 motor feels different (better) than the V85, as it does in fact come on stronger/lower, and doesn't have the dip the V85 has shown in some curves. I also think I liked the V9 better than the V7III or V7850 when it comes to that feel.

I do know that I felt like I NEEDED to spin the V85 much more than the V9 in the same conditions.

Just shift at 6500, like I do.

But the torque "curve" is flat as can be. And it feels that way for sure. :bike-037:

A Fair point and I'm happy to concede it Kev!!

The flatness of the curve as Milosh says from 3k makes it great fun!!

Cheers.... I still want a V9.... I just don't want to get rid of anything else in the fleet (well, I would get rid of the Duc, but Jenn would skin me alive so that's not an option).
