Title: 98 EV , What other seats will fit?
Post by: bigbikerrick on April 28, 2022, 02:36:42 AM
Hello Folks, I have a 98EV with the big ECU under the rear seat, and am wondering if anyone else has been able to fit a one piece seat like from a stone tourer, or a skunk seat from a Cal Vintage? To me , it looks like the P-8 ECU would be in the way, but just thought I would check.( Im currently riding on a Neds seat, which is comfortable, but sits me up a bit too high. )
Thank You
Rick Duarte

If you get an oddessey battery you can squeeze it and the CPU into the battery area which opens up your options.

98 has the big p-8, not going to fit into the battery area.
I had Rich's custom seats redo my seat looong ago. Much better now/still

Ooh, a "skunk seat" would look good on my white Bassa. But the custom seat recommendation above is probably the way to go.

Yes, Normzone, a pearl white Bassa, with a skunk seat would look fabulous!    :thumb:

yes it does, I've done it myself. Use a odessey 925 I think it was.
I'll look for the photographic proof.

I'd like to see that picture. I use a 925, and it barely fits in, you have to wiggle it past the tab for the gas tank mount.
925 dimensions  6.75" wide 6.44" long 4.88" heigh
P-8 size 9" long 7 3/8 wide 2" thick
Maybe you're thinking of the 15M computer?

I've written on this before.  Yes, with a smaller battery, the P8 will quite easily fit into the battery compartment.  Even need to add some foam padding.

Alas, the issue is NOT the p8 itself. Rather, in order to use the P8, Guzzi put a 90 degree recess into the pan base of the seat.  When you ride a long time, your butt sinks directly onto the 90 ridge.  Moving the computer is half the battle.  The other half is modifying and redesigning the seat pan.  This one one of the modifications we did to lower Regina's HDM 98EV.

Thanks guys for the response, and Patrick, for the excellent photos. Thats a tidy install with the ECU next to the battery. I plan to do that to mine. It seems worth it, just to have more seat options.
Thanks again,
Rick.

BTW, when Guzzi moved up to the M15 smaller computer located in the sidecover, they still had a large stock of the original P8 seats.  There are lots of '99 and '00 bikes with no P8 under the seat but still have the offending 90 degree ridge to deliver pain from the seat pan.

What battery is that?
I see it now, 680, 12 amps smaller than the 925

We did the seat work and installed the 680 new in April, 2010.  I replaced it with another on May, 2020.  Good enough service life for me!

Yeah I guess I had the 680 battery too. Lasted 7 years and still strong when I got rid of the bike. BTW The V11 Lemans and sport use the smaller 680 too, no problem.

True, but I've read where people have exchanged the P-8 for the M15.
Seems like a lot of work, wiring harness, and buying the M15. But if your P-8 died, might be an option.

I have been riding my 1998 EV for years and the only seat that has worked for me is a Corbin...same for my 1996 1100 Cali i

there's a little bit more to it than that. I've owned both. The p8 uses a different temp sensor and I think the connections were different. Then there are those two moduli de potenza on the p8 bikes under the left side cover, I don't think the m15 wiring harness has the hook up for them.
#2 in the pic below. Also the P8 uses a crank sensor and cam sensor, I guess you could skip the crank sensor if going to the m15 and it would run. Where's Rodkyll? He the authority on this idea.

My 02 stone has the smaller battery also. Mine had the evap canaster in the box next to it. Thats gone now, and I have a plastic box that holds all my Ins, and reg paperwork.

Went through this a few times. But once more because nothing lasts forever.....
One day i got bored...
I filled the divot in the bottom of my '98 EV seat with kids' modeling clay.
I reinstalled the seat on the bike and jumped my 190# butt all over the seat as hard as I could.
I then removed the seat and thoroughly inspected the modeling clay.
That fat old computer did not make a mark on the clay.
That fat old computer does not go up into the divot in the seat pan.
I assume the divot is an anachronism (like the distributor boss on the V11 casting).
I subsequently hacked out the divot with my trusty Dremel and have been far more comfortable ever since.

Thats an interesting discovery, Ron. My EV has a Neds comfort seat, and that ridge is present in the seat pan. They build up the foam, above it so you dont feel it. Thats probably why the seat sits you up  so  high.
Rick.
