Title: Speedometer repaired
Post by: Bob Wegman on May 02, 2022, 04:44:01 PM
I just received my speedometer back from Joel Levine, who repaired it.  I think it only took about a week from start to finish.  The speedometer works fine now, hope it lasts.  It is from my 2002 EV1100.

What was wrong with it and how much did he charge?

The problem was the odometer didn't record the ridden miles.  It had some missing teeth on the plastic gears due to wear.  Mr. Levine will give you a estimated price when you contact him.

I have the same problem with the original speedo. I have a replacement in now that has made it 13000 miles. What did he charge you and what is the contact info?

I did cut the replacement speedo open and grease the gears. It could last a million miles or crap out tomorrow?

I might like to send the original in and get it fixed and adjusted to actual mileage.

Thank you!
Tom

Nice to see someone rebuilding these. Being that pretty much all the units from this era will or have failed it could be a nice gig to have!

Evidently Mr. Levine has improved on his workmanship but when I sent him the clock from my CX sometime in the late 90's it looked like he opened it with a beer can opener. It worked perfectly fine and you couldn't see the mashed up rim in the rubber surround on the CX but when I ditched that set up for a round headlight I had to source a new clock or send that bunged up one to another repair house. In the end I just bought a used one on eBay with an equal unknown miles of the original clock.

I greased the gears on the speedometer of my 03 cali aluminum, and it was still working well at just under 40K mi when I sold it. I used white lithium grease on mine. Its good to know we have a place to send these in to for professional repair.   :thumb:

He did the ITI speedo on my 2003 V11 LeMans last year.  The odometer hadn't been working properly for about 15 years, if it ever had since I bought it new.  Works great now.  Good communications, reasonable price and fast turn around.  I'd give him a thumbs up.

It had some missing teeth on the plastic gears due to wear.

If it is ITI, the gears that crap out on the odometer are actually metal. They don't mesh properly, and the tips of the metal teeth wear out.

In 2000, my son's CX 100 speedo went bad, and I sent it to Mr. Levine; it took him quite awhile to repair it because he couldn't source a replacement spiral spring to replace the broken one in the unit. Eventually, he fixed it with a slightly tougher spring. The gage worked well, but its needle had somewhat of an inertia to climb from 0 mph. It cost just under $ 300, including shipping.

I called and spoke with Mr. Levine yesterday.  He seems a very nice, very knowledgeable fellow who knows quite a bit about the origin of the ITI models, what fails, how to fix, etc.  He gladly gave me 15-20 minutes of his time on the phone to discuss the issue with mine that is crapping out.  I now feel a bit guilty for not using him as it is always my inclination to defer business to the type of guy he seems; however, I will likely go with the Speedhut unit for my purposes.  It’s about the same price as he quotes me to fix the ITI - and I think his price is fair; yet, my bike is a rebuild and was terribly neglected, sitting out in the Sun for years apparently.  The face of the clock is faded, the speedo needle broke last week when I was just barely touching it, and now that I’ve painted the bike even the stock face (grey with black stripe down the middle) doesn’t really match the new colors.  Put all that together with the fact that I don’t think the ITI was very accurate anyhow and for the same price I’ll probably just keep the stocker to give if I ever sell the bike and invest now in the Speedhut GPS model with nice colors and Guzzi logo.

In one of his meticulous restoration threads, Dave Swanson said he used Palo Alto Speedometer Service for a complete rebuild of his speedo and tach.  I believe Dave quoted around 700+ for the pair to be completely taken apart and restored.  They looked new in his pictures and given the quality of work Dave does, if he raved about the work, it is indeed first rate.

Google them to get their address.

I gave Mr. Levine a slightly more ambitious project. I wanted a resettable tripmeter on my '75 Eldorado. I sent him a donor Eldo Clock with a nice black face and a '80s speedo off a crashed Mille GT. Looks perfect, works perfect, fast service and close to his initial quote.

Just out of curiosity, was the bezel on his CX glass or plastic?  The one on my CX was plastic and I believe it was this was from the factory and it was in kilometers too.
