I picked up a '73 Eldo last summer that has a side stand switch mounted on it. Was this a standard option at any time? or maybe a police model option? I'm most likely going to remove it. I worried that is a future problem when I least need it!

A quick look at Carl's drawings and I didn't see one.
Does it have the extra long Police locking stand or the short stubby civilian one?
You certainly don't need it with the latter style.

No. Must’ve been added at some point.

Forgetting to raise the short stand has resulted in several serious crashes when the riders had to turn left and the stand levered the bike .

It is the shorty. Thank you for the info, I didn't think it was stock. I'll have to check it out to see what he did.

Keep it. The day you forget to hook up the stand, the last thing you'll think as you head for the rock-cut is 'I wish I hadn't removed that switch'.
In getting close to 100,000 miles on my Eldorado, I've fallen off precisely twice: once while riding on a slippery track, and once when I forgot the sidestand and it drove me into a ditch. Others have been less lucky.
Thinking that you can flick it up with your foot if you forget doesn't work.
