Title: Stone windshield change follow up info
Post by: Ncdan on May 16, 2022, 07:45:35 AM
Here’s a little information for those that may want to add the smaller tombstone type shield to replace the larger shield that came with the Stone and other single odometer models.

My 02 Stone came with the large barn door type shield.
Those shields function well and if one likes the looks it’s a great shield.
However after having three other Guzzi’s with the police style shield and HD fork lowers added,  I wanted to change mine over.
One of our members gave me a great deal in an almost new shield and mounting brackets.

When I went to mount the new set up yesterday I ran into an issue.
The Stone has only one gauge, a speedometer mounted right in the middle.
Apparently this setup is different from the models with both tach an OD.
The shield came in contact with the OD about an inch before the brackets lined up with the mounting holes on the triple trees.

I had two options that were reasonable, cut a hole in the shield to allow the OD to protrude through or extend the shield forward some how.
I decided the latter, move the shield foreword.
This was accomplished by adding 3/4 inch barrel washers between the shield and the bracket allowing clearance for the shield and OD.

I’ll add pictures after the fork wind deflectors are added. Hopefully they will come in today.

I just added a 1/2 inch metal strip with holes to each side of the fork. With the speedhut speedo not an issue anymore.

One of my favorite places is aluminumspacers.com .  All manner and sizes of aluminum spacers, and more.

Oh, and a bucket full of various pieces of cutoff stock.

Now I’m looking over the shield and past experience has taught me I’ll have head buffing issues.
A full size CLEARVIEW shield and the HD fork wind deflectors will fix any and all buffering as well as debris and rain hitting my face and helmet.

I’ll post pictures with the deflectors attached when they arrive and I get them modified from HD to MG.

I just got back from a test ride with the HD fork deflectors in place and made a discovery.
The wind buffering that I thought was coming from over the top of a short shield is not the problem.
I’m looking over this stock guzzi shield about 4 inches and after adding the fork deflectors I’m getting near zero buffering!!
The wind was coming from under and up in one’s face.
I’ve wasted a lot of money on buying 4 extra large touring shields over the past 10 years and 3 other Guzzi’s, attempting to get a calm air pocket and now I know the only thing I need to do is add the HD folk deflectors👍

For many many moons I have use Nation Cycle Heavy Duty Police style shields. My beard has always flipped up and darn near gets in my eyes.

I have known the wind issue is not from the top but below the shield. My Eldo tank has the wind sandblasting to prove it.

So how do you mount these lowers? Looks like only one attachment point. I might give them a shot?

BTW: looks good :thumb:

Tom I’ll be glad to walk you through the process but it’s a little to much for me to attempt to fully and clear explain here.
Send me a PM and I’ll fill you in.
As Ms they are two point solidly mounted.
I have mounted them on three other Guzzi’s, this is my 4th. It ain’t my first rodeo with this job👍

When guzzi offers little to no aftermarket equipment and accessories one must adapt and overcome👍

That makes sense now. My shield came with chrome spacers, looks factory. I was wondering why on earth they did that so I removed them. Fits fine. Thanks to you I know that was for the single gauge models.  :thumb:

There are two mounting points. These are on my Road King and you should be able to see them clearly.

Thanks AJ.
To mount the deflectors on the California models the deflectors must be mounted backwards and add an additional hole drilled to attach the shield to the lower triple tree threaded hole, along with the lower shield mounting bracket.
Turning the deflectors backwards has no effect on the function of the deflectors , in fact they may even do a better job of deflecting the wind turned that way. This procedure must be done so the deflectors will work with the turn signals, where they are located.

I’ve ridden before all types of fairings and shields over my riding years and there are simply no better protection from wind turbulence than this system and the combination looks like a factory application, to me anyway.

If anyone wants to talk to me about this application just PM me for my phone number👍

I put deflectors on my Harley Slim. I tried them both ways, backwards was better but no matter what I did I could not get rid of the buffeting. I ultimately took everything off and rode it naked. Not me the,  the bike.     I think the sheet metal around the headlight and upper fork area had a lot to do with it.

I love my smaller sport sheild but as you all know the buffeting can be rough!   So what model HD are those lower deflectors for? or are they all pretty much the same? \

My shield is not much if any bigger than yours.
The fix is with the fork wind deflectors.

Before it was busted, I had a Plexifairing 3, which has lowers molded into to it, no buffeting.  Replaced with a Plexstar 2 (no lowers) and buffets terribly.

The plexi 3 was a great shield, I’ve had 2 of them and the plexi 2.
I also found the 3 to offer a calm pocket of air and elements protection. Also like you said I found the 2 to allow air to come up under the shield and in the face.
The old fairing I just removed was shaped just like the plexi 3 and I’d venture out to say that’s where National Cycle got their pattern, they are almost identical.
The one that came on mine was getting cloudy and had developed a crack running from one of the bracket holes that I drilled to stop the run.
I decided it was time to change out and I’ve had such a great experience with the larger tombstone style shields and fork deflectors, I made the change and will never look back.
I spoke with CLEARVIEW Windshields today and looking into getting the touring Police style/tombstone shield to replace the small Moto guzzi shield.
I like to look through a shield instead of over it. That eliminates a lot of rain, bees and bug strikes as well as totally stopping the wind turbulence.

Nice work Dan, nice looking shield also. I have always preferred to look over the shield as my full face has a shield. I promote you to Master wind breaker.  Guess I'll have to get off my arse and get those lowers you sent me mounted up :thumb:

I attempted to get what I needed for the Stone but as most other after market motorcycle company’s they offer very little for MG and most of that is generic in nature.
CLEARVIEW MOTORCYCLE SHIELD does offer MG specific shields. One can contact Craig and he will assist with a shield to fit the needs for most of the MG bikes. They offer an over sized Turing model for the California models.

Clearview offers a replacement shield for the EV Touring that is taller and a bit wider. Stock was too short and the tall was almost a look through, but not tall enough for that. Cut about  3/4" in off and was perfect for me. If you ask, they offer blems. It so happened that the blem was in the bit I removed.

Call CLEARVIEW and ask to speak with Craig.
I’m working with him now getting the measurements he has requested for the California shield attachment holes.
A larger shield should be available soon.

Sorry John😔
I spoke with Craig this afternoon and he said someone he thought from the WG forum called him about a specific shield.
I was ordering the oversized shield for my setup on the stone. I just prefer the coverage if looking through a good quality shield. It definitely offers more protection from the wind and elements.
The pratice of looking over the top of a shield was due to the original shields being distorted. Now shields have the Technology to be as clear and distinct as a vehicle windshield.
By the way I got a minor blemish oversized police style for 166.00. How much was that special made one🤔😩

Why was the oversized touring shield not acceptable to you?

Yeah mine was 208 shipped. I had it cut like the roadking version which is less pointy at the top. I really prefer looking over the shield and having the wind hit the top of my helmet. It makes sure the top vent works well, especially in this hot humid Arkansas summers. The width will be the same as yours but closer to factory height.

Good deal👍
Let’s share pictures when we get them in and installed.
Are you going to do the HD fork deflector’s?
You will be amazed at the totally calm pocket you will be riding in.

This is just not a sufficient shield to do the job I need a windshield to preform.

I willing to try them for sure, just need to wait for the account to rebuild. The shield was an impulse buy which isn’t bad except it’s right on top of YSS top line shocks  :weiner:
