Title: Hey, Charlie..
Post by: Chuck in Indiana on June 23, 2022, 07:31:54 AM
Austin called me this morning, and is headed to the Virginia rally. He has what sound to me to be regulator issues on his G5, and I told him I *assumed* you would go there. If you do, could you take a regulator? He said he had called Jim Hamlin, and he doesn't think he has one.
TIA

I have a few good used ones. He's Messaged me via Facebook, I'll get in touch with him.

Chuck,

Can you find a similar regulator at an auto parts store?  I’ve seen that done with Loopframes in need.

It's a little tougher - '70s vintage Mercedes used the same one, but it's unlikely a NAPA, Autozone, etc. will stock it.

Thanks.. :thumb: Austin asked me if a regulator could be wired in, and I told him that was out of my experience level, but I didn't think so.

I used an Echlin from NAPA on my '70 Ambo.  Not sure on a G5 and I don't think I'd try it.

Totally different systems - generator vs. alternator and likely Marelli vs. Bosch. Yes, for a '70 Ambo a '61 Ford Falcon regulator works.

The voltage on Austin's bike is going bonkers - sometimes up to 16, other times down to 13. Does sound like the regulator... isn't.

A solid state regulator??  I haven't done the homework on what would work.

Could be an intermittent grounding issue.

That's what I use. The adjustable one from MG Cycle in particular:

The one I linked to above from Autozone is s.s. as well, just non-adjustable.

I pulled the known-good solid state regulator off of my V50 III and will be taking it to the rally, along with a diode board, just in case.

You are a good guy, Charlie.. but we all know that.
I put the adjustable MG cycle one on the AeroLario, and it's been solid for several years, now. He said his voltmeter was going from 15.1 to 12.5. Of course, it *could* be a ground, but I've hammered looking at that stuff regularly to him.

Well I think I figured it out I figured out. I like all old Guzzis carry tools under the seat, of all the things the 10 mm wrench rubbed away the coating on the back of the regulator on a couple of the contacts causing it to short out which explains why it was intermittent and going from over charge to under. Moved all the tools and it was steady. It messed something up in it though. I am still thankfully charging but it won't get up to 14.2 until I hit around 5k and with my headlight (led low draw) off and just my cellphone plugged in to the charger it drops by .4-5 volts. Before it would get up to 14 by 3k ish now 42-45 where the old gal likes to set she is only at 13.5 ish with only my phone plugged in. Before it had no affect on it really.
Also somewhere in the hills of Virginia my shift lever broke off (welded once before) luckily it was still attached and it happened going through a small town two blocks from an auto garage. Called they had a small welder 10 minutes later I was rolling away with a bubble gum covered shifter but intact haha. Found a machine shop in Floyd near the campground called them up said what was going on and they said come by I think we can get ya sorted. Literally as we speak I'm Bolting the fixed shifter back on! Guy cut away the bubble gum and tiged all the way around it for me! Should be good till I get home and I can work on bracing the shifter so this doesn't ever happen again. One of those rainy day projects I had been meaning to do but never got around to. Haha. Thanks for all the help! I'll see Charlie today sometime! Get one of the new used regs thrown in the old gal and I'll get a solid state one on order now!

Glad to see you are getting it sorted, Austin. All those G5 shifters will fail..even the outrageously priced new ones at harpers. What I did was make a solid stub that closely fit the interior of the old shifter. Tigged that on the shifter assembly, then slid the arm over that with and made a couple of rosette welds to the stub. That will *fix* the infamous G5 shifter issues.

Yeah I remember when you had done yours, I had planned on doing that as well and adding a gusset on the inside but just one of those projects that kept getting out off because it hasn't been an issue and since mine had been welded before I figured it would be fine till I got around to it haha. Oh well all good now!

What AZach was calling the "regulator" was actually the diode board. Good thing I took both with me.

I've not had the pleasure of working on a t3 yet or really being able to dissect one, what is the difference in shifters?

Sounds like an adventure.

Wouldn't be a Guzzi trip without some sort of failure haha especially when traveling with a group like Job, Todd and Craig haha! But alas the old gal got me home.

Shorter shift throw, more rearsets (mid set), different frame lowers, different footpeg brackets.
Shoot me a PM if interested.
