Title: No acceleration
Post by: Rochey42 on June 25, 2022, 02:02:32 PM
I'm looking for a bit of guidance. For reference I do regular maintenance myself and have for a number of years, but am not skilled enough to do any serious repairs.

I was concerned that my '17 V7III was accelerating a touch slower than normal a few days ago. I can be a bit of a hypochondriac when it comes to the bike, though, so it is possible this was imagined. Yesterday it started fine, but when I pulled out of the garage it would not accelerate above around 10 mph although it does rev. I turned around to return back up the driveway and now it struggled to not stall as I released the clutch.

I looked over the bike to see if it was an easy problem. The spark plugs are fine (only a month old anyway), air filter/air box fine, the throttle cable and throttle body seem fine, the butterfly valve opens properly, clutch cable seems ok. Of course with the exception of the spark plugs or air filter I could be mistaken about any of these.

My first thought was that there was a vacuum leak somewhere, but I also noticed that the wire coming from the side stand sensor seems to be frayed. It may have gotten caught the last time I had the bike up on the rear stand. Would a problem with the side stand sensor cause these symptoms? Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help.

Are you saying your going 10mph while the engine is rev’d up?or it revs up in neutral?

Fuel restriction

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

It revs up in gear but won’t go faster than 10mph.
Its been ~26k miles and 3 years since the fuel filter was changed.

If engine revs rise when in gear but there is no increase in speed, then it's the clutch. It's either worn out or there is another issue preventing the plate from engaging fully.

I think we are having trouble with your description.
Are the tires at full pressure. If low funny things happen with the TC. Is it (TC) in 1 or off? 2 sucks. Next change the fuel filter.

Sorry about the confusing description.
You were right, it was the traction control acting wonky. The tire pressure wasn't low, but somehow I had it in TC2. Once I turned it off everything runs fine. Thanks for the help, everyone!

I firmly dislike the way the traction control system operates.  I had a similar scenario when an ABS sensor went out on the V7 II.  Disconcerting to say the least.

You're luck you don't have a seat sensor to prevent  you from starting unless you're on the bike.
