This week my 2010 Griso 8V turned 20,000 trouble free miles! It was fitting that it turned 20K riding to our monthly Guzzi gathering, just as I pulled in the parking lot. I took a picture of the dash but I can't figure out how to post the photo (I know I am lame at this computer stuff).
This bike I bought new and except for regular maintenance has not had an issue. I ride it on long trips, short trips, around town and everywhere in cold or hot weather...
So, I guess for a flat tappet bike, not bad...
Let the flames begin...

YES!!... RIDE ON...and don't worry about anything! :thumb: :bow: :cool: :boozing:
6+ years ago, when I bought my Centauro GT, I received a huge ration of shit from all my Guzzi buddies.
Stuff like..."The engine is going to blow up...they are unreliable...you can't get parts...Blah-Blah...Blah-Blah... :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :shocked: :shocked: :huh: :huh:
Well, that was at mileage 6K, and now I have 21K miles...and no issues...I just rode it 607+ miles round trip to Datil, New Mexico and back...for the 4th or 5th time now. I also averaged about 40-42 MPG! Not too shabby for a 24 year old Guzzi!
Of course, I did all the sensible mods shortly after I bought it, and it is been well maintained all along.
So RIDE ON...and don't look back! :wink: :cool: :boozing: :bow: :thumb:

Shouldn’t this engine have roller lifters installed before it explodes?

Absolutely, if you want to keep riding that bike I would strongly recommend getting the roller conversion ASAP. While kits are still available. At 20,000 miles certainly an inspection of the cam followers is overdue.

My 2011 Norge showed tappet issues by 12,000 miles. Got rollers. As the old Fram filter add use to say..."You can pay me now or pay me later." That later will be much more expensive.

No flames here.. but.. one of these days the flat tappet engines *will* make the dogga dogga noise. All of them. The Kid's white low mileage Grease O was headed that way, but he caught it in time.
It's your bike.. do as you wish, but don't say you weren't warned.

This is the "kit", to fix it yes?!? :cool: :bow: :thumb: :boozing: :smiley: :wink:

Not a cheap fix but the alternative is even more expensive.

Yes...true...and worse of all being STUCK somewhere, on a long trip...far from home with a blown motor..... :rolleyes: :shocked: :huh: - - -"Dooooooohhhhhh!!"

I guess I just don't see what the advantage of waiting is. I got mine done through the dealer process which made it a lot easier, but hat pathway today is either difficult or impossible depending on who you talk to. Issues like these don't get easier the further down the road you get.
As to how much time you have, who knows. Best case I can remember was a Stelvio making it around 50k. But it's certain that it will fail eventually; no amount of oil changes, zddp, or good fortune will change a bad engineering design.

When I think about it...just hearing that "Dogga-Dogga-Dooga" sound cannot be a good feeling... :laugh: :grin: :rolleyes: :shocked: :huh:

No one’s going to flame you mate.
It’s easy for us to sit back and watch with a quiet assuredness, when you know that there’s going to be a crash and you’re far enough away not to get hurt.
Nobody is going to laugh at you WHEN you find out that you’ve lunched your motor, but there’ll be someone who says…”I told you so…”
I do wonder in all sincerity, how and why you think the sword will not fall on you….?

What did the tappets look like at the last valve adjustment? Are they showing any signs of wear?
An owner certainly has the right not to do the fix even when aware of the highly recommended path to choose.
It's a bit of a crapshoot with a rather certain eventual outcome based on the topic experts however, but with averaging 2K per year on average, that's not a lot of riding.
I guess the question is when does the event occur or if it's a slow decline that eventually causes an erosion in performance, at which point, a new engine will be needed.

Just my experience with this. Bought a 2012 NTX new. At bout 13K I decided to take a look at the flats due to all of the back and forth on the list about the issue. Pulled the rocker boxes and sure enough the tappets were showing flaking DLC and the cam lobes were discolored. Got the roller kit for no cost through my dealer and did the install myself. Many happy miles afterward. No flame or advice just letting you know what I experienced. :thumb:

Unfortunately, to see the followers DLC surface you need to pull off the cam boxes. At 20,000 miles the likelihood of degradation is pretty high. Well worth taking a look at this point. My 08 showed early signs of wear at only 3000 miles. There was no delamination of the DLC yet but the cam lobe noses were heat tinged and a small circular pattern of wear was developing on the followers centers. I'll see if I can find the pics . My 08 with the A5 motor and required the C kit which includes shims that need to be installed beneath the valve springs. So the heads needed to come off. Thanks to Pete Ropers tutorial ( the rollerization thread} I was able to get through it for only the costs of the kit.

As I told Tony C. today...the problem is...when that motor finally decides to go "POOF"...you will most likely be stuck somewhere in Nevada....like this...100+ miles from ANYWHERE... :rolleyes: :shocked: :huh:
* 100+ degrees and rising...
* Limited water...
* No shade...
* No cell service...
("Doooohhhh!!") :rolleyes: :shocked: :huh: :laugh: :grin: :wink:

I advised Tony, maybe it's time to trade the ol' Griso in on a *BRAND NEW * 2022 V7-III 850!!
...then, set it up like one of these two beauties for touring....:wink: :bow: :thumb: :cool: :boozing:

And pass the issue onto someone else who won't realize he's bought a hand grenade...nice.
In some motorcyclist circles that kind of behaviour is severly frowned on.

Now, one would assume any reputable Guzzi dealer will complete the roller tappet fix. from the kit..and advise the new buyer accordingly... :wink: :thumb:
-
Never assume....even less so these days when honesty and transparency seem to belong in the past. Being honest and taking a hit is the only honerable way to behave.
-
Yeah, I’d fix the bike then either keep it or trade/sell. A competent dealer will either ask or inspect if the bike had been fixed and when they find out it hasn’t, than the trade in value will plummet or they won’t take the bike.
Will Guzzi give him the parts to fix or is that time gone?
-
Regarding trusting who you buy a used bike from I called a used bike dealer and asked them if they had checked this very same issue ,the response was very disappointing as firstly they had no knowledge of any such problem and secondly they were not going to bother looking into it ,the inference being that as they warranties for such a low period of time it wasn't their problem when it happened outside of that timeframe .This told me all I needed to know about them but also a reminder yo always "Buyer Beware" and do due diligence .Not all are the same but some don't give a ***t .
-
Yes, unless you buy *BRAND NEW* with a warranty....CAVEAT EMPTOR is the rule of thumb...but sometimes, *BRAND NEW* does not guarantee anything either... :rolleyes: :shocked: :huh:
-
The sad reality is that fixing the problem out of pocket isn't cheap . But kicking the can down the road will be much more costly. Especially considering that the front main crank bearing is integral to the engine case. Once the missing DLC fouls the oil circuit, you could be looking at a complete overhaul with a new engine case, oil pumps bearings ect. Griso's are too nice to let self destruct when it's avoidable and caught early.
