Ok call me crazy but I’ve been thinking about a Roamer, again. :shocked:
I know but that motor just haunts me, I dunno, whatever.
Anyhoo, I’ve seen some with a V7 fuel tank and liked the look.
Now I’m wondering if anyone has put an 18” front tire on one?
Any other mods?
I know it would cost a few pesos but they can be had for pretty reasonable $’s right now.
Whatcha’ think?
:popcorn:
-
I believe Sarah Greer or her husband Doug did the tank.
I wouldn't bother with the wheel/tire.
But I totally get the idea.
-
Do you think lowering the triple tree by an inch would be ok and kind of offset the 19” wheel diameter or not really?
The format end was vague on the Roamer and I didn’t like the balloon tires of the Bobber.
Thanks Kev m

I honestly can't say. Maybe I should retract my previous statement as I've only ridden the Bobber (and loved it and had no problem with that front tire).
You rode the Roamer then and didn't like the front end feel?
-
I had 2 Roamers and a Bobber.
The Bobber actually handled better, just didn’t like the balloon front.
The Roamers actually felt light and vague.

Ahhhhhhh interesting.
Then you know way more than me.
I like the way the Bobber handled, but I also like the V7.
Have you ridden a V7?
If yes and you like it better, then I get the tire/wheel change.
But I also think your thought of raising the forks could be interesting too. I've had good luck doing that on a Sportster with similar architecture.

Yeah I have a V7-850 Stone that is a great bike.......but..... ....it still doesn’t have that original V9 motor.
Now put an older V9 motor in the V7-850 frame and.....naw I wouldn’t do that.
Still musing about the Roamer.
Thanks Kev m for your input

Sorry I'm so left field in this.
But damn if you didn't just speak what I have felt since riding the V9 Bobber Sport and the 850 V7.
I agree.
I agree so much I recently considered seeing if a dealer would take my RK in trade for a new leftover BS.

hahahahahaaaaa - ME TOO !

What is it about V9 motor that you prefer over that in the V7-850?
I run a Roamer I love it, so am intrigued by the difference

....
+1.
I don't have a Roamer or a V7 850, but I'm fascinated by this thread and would like to hear more about the differences between these two motors as I thought they were the same.... TIA
-
The early V9 (I can't say about the EU5 ones as I've not ridden them so they might be the same as the EU5 V7), but the early V9 felt like a big block.
I don't know how/why, but it had the overall feel very similar to my Cali 1100 Jackal.
I'm assuming it was tuned for torque.
But it was such a strong impression I sought out more demo rides on another day to confirm it. I felt the same way.

It does feel like a torquey motor, WOT in 3rd is a joy.
However, it's about 8 years since I sold my Cali 1100 so can't really remember to compare to a big block
Mines a 2017 bike
We need to overlay a set of torque curves :thumb:

The Roamer engine has a big wallop of low down punch and long, long legs all at the same time. Endlessly entertaining in 4th gear alone. My 850 is feeling punchier as I put on the miles, but nothing compared to the V9.
Here's the thread detailing the tank and seat swap:
https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=102756.0
Crashcraddock went on to change out the front end and frame rails for V7 III components, oh boy that'd be the ticket for sure. But the tank and seat swap is easily doable and affordable, be sure to enlarge the pictures so you can see the detailed notes. We've got the fender block and seat lock on hand if you decide to go for this Jack.

Yeah that Bobber sport is very interesting
-
Yes!
What a transformation!
Further than what I might go but very nice.
Wanna trade CrashCraddock?!
Anyway, it’s what others have already said about the V9;
TORQUE low down and
wonderful line all the way to rev limiter
feels like a big block Guzzi oh, and
better gas mileage to boot!

p.s. For my V9’s anyway, no throttle stumble. I did the fix for the V7-850 as recommended here but still a stumble.

In case you missed it in the V7 850 thread, this may be the cure for your stumble:

OK, lots of personal testimonials to how the V9 motor feels.... But is there a technical difference between it and the motor in the V7 850?

I haven't poured through the parts books yet, but I SUSPECT there WAS as difference.
Remember the V9's we're talking about were NOT EU5 compliant, they were the earlier 2017-2020 EU4 models.
Just based on THAT alone (and having ridden both) I suspect there is at the least a tuning/mapping difference between them and the current V7 850.
I haven't ridden a current EU5 V9, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it now shared the tuning and felt the same as the V7 850.
But if someone has the inclination to pour through the parts books I'd be interested to hear the results.
-
I’ve never ridden a V9 in any configuration.
But from what I hear, they are punchier although less outright power than the V85. What I can say, is that if the V85 was released with the V9 motor for correspondingly less $$$, I certainly would have tested one before getting the ‘85.
-
Yes Kev m and Huzo
The V9 E4 motor comes on with most of it’s torque at 3k and is flat, big difference imho and seat dyno.
V85 and V7-850 come at 5k
V9 E4 weighs less as well

Af1 has separate parts books for the 2016-2020 Roamer, Bobber, and Bobber Sport, plus a fourth parts book for the 2021-22 Eu5 V9
2019 Bobber Sport: https://www.af1racing.com/store/ProdImages/st3/gu184.pdf
2021-22 EU5 V9: https://www.af1racing.com/ProdImages/st3/gu403.pdf
Different part numbers on:
* Throttle body
* Heads and valves (some common parts, mostly gaskets)
* Camshaft (rocker arms have same numbers)
* Cylinder, piston, piston pins
* Different Cranks - Bobber Sport uses the bolted rods, the other uses the Pressed Crank.
* Different transmission #
EU 5 Stone: https://www.af1racing.com/ProdImages/st3/GU214.pdf
compared to EU 5 V9
* ALMOST same part number for whole engine
* Different crankcase numbers
* Different Throttle Body #
* Different Camshaft #
* ALMOST same part number on cylinder/piston
So draw your own conclusions.
* Same crankshafts
* ALMOST same transmission number

I see the Roamers as closer to a Nevada than the V7 series in frame geometry
But with a naturally larger newer motor and a beefy-er suspension
This reporter has heard from reliable sources that they were a big seller, but of course, Guzzi stopped making them
-
The Nevada and V7C frames were different? Like in important ways?
Heck are the V7 and V9 frames really different now too?
(Guess I'll have to go back and look at that next lol).
-
Good stuff, thanks for the research Kev m.
I of course am focused on the V9 E4

I can't remember when you bought your bike, but bear in mind the TSB was just released mid-April 2022.

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a V7-850 and put Roamer seat and rear fender on the bike?

But that completely misses the point of the "superior" (feel and arguably design) of the E4 V9 motor.
-
With the rim riding configuration I agree. Pretty sure I see a field of half-seized sprats and brass plated nickel slits. The bracketed caps and splay-flexed brace columns are typical with vent dampeners to dampening hatch depths of one half meter from the damper crown to the spurve plinth.
If I’m not mistaken, they would bolster 12 husk nuts to each girdle jerry while flex tandems press a task apparatus of ten? vertically composited patch hamplers then pin flam-flastened pan traps at both maiden apexes of the jimjoints.
… but it’s just a guess.
-

Maybe the finer minutiae and subtleties of the V85 vs. V9 mills are lost on me.
As cheap as used Guzzis go for, I suppose buying both a V7 and a V9, then doing an engine swap would be the cleanest method. Stick the V9 mill into the V7 and keep it. Stick the V7 mill into the V9 and sell it to recoup some of the costs.
The world has not nearly enough Frankenguzzis.

Right, it’s about the V9 E4 motor.

All else remaining the same, if I could snap my fingers and have the V9 engine in my V7 frame I'd do it in a heartbeat. It pulled better on the bottom, ran better on top, loved regular gas and got 60 mpg.

You ran regular (87) gas with no problem?

Never ran anything else. 2017 V9 Roamer.

Ditto on the gas

The owner’s manual calls for 90 octane (US rating). I’m surprised you haven’t had pinging problems especially in hot weather.

Yeah go figure, I dunno.
Better gas?
I also run non-ethanol.

It’s weird to me. I didn’t read this whole thread, but I think I get some of the point, folks really like the punch and overall feel of the original v9.
To bad practically no one over here was willing to buy one when they had a chance.
But I did. Dropped 1k in suspension improvements and now have one of the most entertaining motorcycles I can imagine.
-
I’m so silly I bought 2 Roamers and 1 Bobber and didn’t do the suspension upgrades and tweaks to any of them. :violent1:
