Title: Contis on Tonti
Post by: Scout63 on October 25, 2022, 09:27:33 PM
Has anyone fit Contis on a Tonti big block? Seems like a natural combination. I’m mentally framing out my winter project. Or I could just slip on some old Bubs and save a bunch of money and fitment issues.

I run Bub Conti reps on my T.  An original set of conti's are going to cost you a small fortune.

Back in the 80's they were up there with the lafranconis for performance freaks in the UK ...expensive and dubious quality then and now .
A set of good replicas will be around a grand in Europe so as far as I was concerned it was Mistrals.

Found this video a few years ago, this is what the 1100 engine sounds like with Conti Replicas. (FFW to around 1'20")

Still unsure what the magic is as I've never seen a set in person, but I think they are hollow with a grater-like straight tube that to me resembles the ones in the Valteks (and many other things out there). Someday I want to try the Valteks without the packing material to see if they sound close.

Does anyone have a photo of conti's looking down the barrel so-to-speak?

I was lucky enough to find a pair of BUB conti replicas that were made to run on Harley's . Nice long
taper and the same cheese grater innards . They sound great on my Le Mans 2 , but you don't start it
in the neighbourhood before 9:00 am  . Peter

Barrel of an old set of Valteks I just picked up. This is the set I plan on restoring (was asking recently how to remove chrome in another post a few weeks ago). I think that raised grater cut baffle has a performance effect maybe, similar to a reverse cone? (vs. just a perforated tube)

I had some Vance and Hines on a Harley years ago, and they had that same baffle cut type, but mostly just a baffle inside a barely larger tube, so not sure if there is a performance aspect behind it, sound wave dispersion or it's just the machine used.

I’ll take a photo and post tomorrow Groover. I installed a set of real Conti silencers on my 860GT Ducati and the difference from the factory LaFranconis is significant.  They are pretty loud but sound great. They aren’t cheap though.  A complete set of real Conti head pipes, rosettes, crossover, clamps and mufflers for a bevel will run about $1000 more than a full Guzzi big block LaFranconi setup from MG Cycle. Probably not worth the money for a V7 Sport unless the look, fitment and performance is all that and a bag of crisps.

The Conti vs Bubs dilemma. My .02 cents worth.
The original Contis, both in 750  and or 860/900 form  have welded on brackets which may need butchering-er ... modification to fit correctly to low footrest bikes as in V7S,850T/3/G5 etc.. whereas the Bubs have slotted mounts which allow bespoke brackets to be fabbed to eliminate the slight but noticeable (and unsightly) muffler  droop at the rear. For my Bub Conti   SPNT I used the stock Lafranconi brackets
For the LM and bikes with rearsets the Bub head pipes made for Conti replicas may be the best choice for either Bub or real Contis.
The other option is a H pipe angled outwards and upswept to get that Bevel 900SS exhaust profile.
another choice for  Conti replicas may be  Keihan  as they have mounting bosses instead of Ducati welded brackets.

As far as the upswept exhaust on an Italian twin, Moto Guzzi did it at least 1-2 yrs before any Ducati twin ….

Guzzista, do you happen to know if those Bub head pipes you mention are available still or anywhere? I think they have a sharp turn-up at the rear, correct?

Yes, an upswept and splayed out outlet is what I remember. As per availability, Bubs for Guzzi they have not been produced for quite some time .
