Title: Vintage Brembo M/cyl question
Post by: GuzziV50 on November 14, 2022, 03:22:45 PM
I recently purchased a V50 III and decided to renew the brakes, including new master cylinders. The rear one is fairly common, being found on LeMans 1000 1984 to1987 (LeMans IV), LeMans 1000 1988 to 1993 (LeMans V), 1000 S, V50, V50 II, V50 III, V50 Monza, V65C, V65SP, V65TT, Lario, California 1100, Jackal, EV, Stone, Stone Tour, EV Touring, Special Sport, Bassa, Aluminum, Titanium, California III, SP III,California Special, California Vintage, Strada, Mille GT. I mounted the new one and cannot for the life of me figure out how to install the return spring. When I removed the old one, the spring just fell out onto the floor, and I never got a chance to see how it was attached. There is no mention of it in the brakes section of the shop manual. If someone with one of the above listed models could post a picture showing this spring, I would really appreciate it.
TIA

This is what it looks like on my LM1, suspect it's the same on the later models. Spring hooks to the rear of M/C and to the linkage arm.

I put a new rear master cylinder on my V50 III as well. I tried using the pivot pin from the old one (the spring fits onto it) and bending the end to go around the new master cylinder like it did on the old one. Neither worked well and I ended up not fitting that spring at all. Works fine without, the pedal feel is just much lighter. There's probably a way of adding a different type of external spring, but I haven't pursued it.

Totally different spring. Mine looks like a dog's back leg...

Does the M cylinder look like the V65GT?

If you zoom in just below the voltage regulator, you can see that it hooks under the lever.

This what the new one looks like. It's shaped just different enough from the original that I couldn't make the original spring work.

The spring looks like this:

Yes, that's what it looks like, but its the other end of the spring that I can't figure out.

On the original master cylinder it just hooks around the underside of the round body of the master cylinder.
