Title: Mike Tiberio has passed
Post by: Antietam Classic Cycle on November 15, 2022, 07:30:01 PM
Guzzi racer extraordinaire Mike Tiberio has passed. His daughter Robin posted this on Facebook:

Robin Tiberio

After a hard-fought, year-long battle with cancer, my dad, Michael Tiberio, finally lost the war this past weekend.
To say we are devastated is an understatement. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing my Dad knows he was an absolute force. And as a self-proclaimed Daddy’s Girl, he was the center of my world.

He was also a lot of other things. A fearless badass who tore 135 miles per hour down racetracks as his fun. Incredibly intelligent and wise. Fiercely dedicated to his loved ones. A hilarious, quirky, practical jokester. A live life loud and leave nothing on the table type of guy. It’s remarkable to reflect on how much life he truly lived in his 68 years.

I could go on for days and still not do any justice to the man my Dad was and how much he meant to me. I am so grateful for the time we did have together - he taught me how to be brave, carve a place for myself in this world, not take everything too seriously, and cherish the things that really matter. If I stick to those lessons as we go into the future without him, I know I’ll make him proud and be okay.

PS: For anyone who would like to attend or send flowers/condolences, we will be holding a service in early December. More info to come

That leaves a hole in my heart.

I always watched in admiration from afar, as Mike obviously marched to his own drummer, and pushed the limits every step of his journey.

Wishing him a smooth run home.

Sincere condolences to his family & friends

Yeah +1
Over and above his on track exploits, the new (to me) information about his dedication to family only takes him higher.
Nail that line Mike and good luck… :thumb:

Ouch.

Sending my deepest condolences to family and friends. I spoke with Mike a few times while negotiating buying his wonderful eldo-vert. He was an absolute gem of a human. The motorcycle I bought from him speaks volumes about the man, some of the most intelligent modifications I've come across on any guzzi, just so well executed and thoughtful. I knew it was a perfect motorcycle the moment I pulled it out of the truck.

I have thought of him often while riding over the past year and really hoped that he might be beating his illness, in some way he will always be there in my thoughts whenever I ride the bike.

We'll do some kind of ceremony for him involving the bike over the coming days here in England.

Rest in peace Mike the bike

Unfortunately, I missed that trip to Bonneville with Mike. I was on a long planned Walleye fishing trip with The Kid and The Grandkid. It would have been awesome.
(Facing West and raising glass) Have a great trip, Mike..

Dang. I first learned of Mike while I was still in the Air Force in Japan in the mid 90's. Someone gave me either a Rider or Biker magazine with an article by Mike regarding a completely leverless convert. The magazine writer seemed impressed that since the Convert had linked brakes there was no need for a brake lever and since Mike kept the Convert in High gear he removed the "clutch" lever too.

Never got to meet him in person but we have exchanged many PM's over the years.

Condolences to those close,
Luap

Only met Mike once, at a truckstop halfway to DC where he sold me an MG Robin moped. Really nice guy, knew these bikes inside and out; his records and race results spoke to that. His unconventional thinking and solutions were a big asset to the community and I hate to see he's gone. Peace and comfort to the family, I'm sure it's an even greater loss to them.

There was a lot to love about Mike! His impact is eloquently summarized by his daughter in her announcement. He definitely lived large. There was one time that I recall that still makes me smile. At one of the MD / DC Sunday breakfast meet-ups there was a fairly large gathering of members milling around in the diner parking lot enjoying a warm Fall day kicking tires. As we were about to head inside Mike wheels into the parking lot on the ever evolving Vert, takes off his helmet and states nonchalantly:
" Sorry I'm late, got a ticket, 90 in a 45. Now I'm hungry, let's eat." What a cat!

My deep sympathy to Mike’s family.

Mike came to the Mid- Atlantic Italian Motorcycle Festival most every year. We had a number of enjoyable conversations over the years and he ended up buying my 1000SP after a deer T-boned me.

A good guy.

The night after I posted earlier in this thread, I rode Mike's eldo-vert up to Hatfield House, a truly ancient place that means a lot to me for various reasons I'll not go into here... Just before I left to return home at dusk, I came face to face with a beautiful owl, who flew down to sit on a fence only a couple of feet away from me. We had a long stare at each other and then he flew away.

I always look for signs in the world around me when someone passes, so make of that what you will.

Again, condolences to all who were close to Mike.

I believe the signs are there. Our perception is usually fog shrouded. I’ll probably think of an owl when I think of Mike.

I only met him once or twice at rally’s but remember one particular comment he made. The discussion was about Guzzi wheels and he exclaimed, lead - butter ,inferring the wheels weighed like lead and had the strength of butter! Ain’t it strange what we store in our memories…

I met Mike for the first time when I was 19 and the proud owner of a '76 Convert. The MD/DC guys met up somewhere (MD/DC Rep. at the time Shelby Kenard's house?) and rode up to a motorcycle show at Morven Park in Leesburg. Mike and Shelby were both riding Le Mans IIIs, something I aspired to (of course).

I'm sure he was at our monthly breakfasts, but the next time I remember was when Team Dr. John Moto Guzzi was racing at Summit Point, Sept. '85. About a week before I had hit a fox while on my way home from work late at night, totaling my 1000SP and not doing me much good either! My right hand was bandaged and arm in a sling, but somehow I drove over to Summit Point in my Bertone X1/9. After the race was over and everyone headed out, I found myself a few cars behind Mike riding his Le Mans, with Dr. John and crew a few cars behind me. Back then Summit Point Rd. had a nasty S turn in it, and Mike went off the road in the first one, ending up in a thicket of thorny bushes. Dr. John and crew got him and the bike out of the bushes, Mike was pretty scratched up. I volunteered to take him to nearby Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Charles Town, so they helped him into my car and off we went. Mike could see I was having difficulty shifting, so he shifted for me - "team driving".  I stayed with Mike at the hospital until his wife was reached and on her way.

About a year later I was selling the old Convert and Mike came to buy it. It seems that Jefferson Memorial had missed that his left wrist was broken, it was now in a cast and he needed something to ride. It was also around this time that Mike started racing, using the Le Mans III as the basis.
